VI. Rationale:

In 2018, Iloilo Science and Technology University established a program which

was called Institutional Sustainability and Adaptability through Technologies Utilization
(ISAT U) to promote the United Nations’ SDG goals. The Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in
2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by
2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity (UN, n.d.).

One of the SDG goals is SDG 2 entitled ‘Zero Hunger’. The global issue of
hunger and food insecurity has shown an alarming increase since 2015, a trend
exacerbated by a combination of factors including the pandemic, conflict, climate
change, and deepening inequalities (UN, 2023).

With this project, problems of food insecurity will be lessened and environmental
protection and climate change action will be promoted and highlighted in the
community.

VII. Project Description:

This project aims to establish a nursery that will be used by the barangay to
propagate seedlings and plants needed for their community garden. It allows the
barangay to have a consistent supply of plants which can be distributed to households
of Brgy. Lanit, Jaro, and may be utilized for the feeding program of the barangay.
To facilitate the execution of this project, Group 4 of CWTS Enviro-3, together
with the committee on agriculture of Brgy. Lanit will conduct a community visit in order to
gather information about the barangay such as the existing projects that have a
correlation with the community project to be implemented by the group as well as the
resources that are abundant in the barangay. In addition, it will help the group to assess
the challenges, and the pros and cons of the project before drafting the final proposal
which will be approved by the barangay committee on agriculture and the subject
adviser.

The site will be assessed and information such as the length, width, and size of
the nursery will be planned and will be outlined through a drawing with dimensions and
an in-text description of the specifications. Available resources for the construction of
the nursery will be checked in order to adjust the budget for the materials that will be
bought. Some materials include the following:

(1) Bamboo (12-15pcs)

(2) Cement (1 sack, 40 kg)
(3) Nails (1 box)
(4) UV plastic (8x3)
(5) Net (20x45m)
(6) Seeds (7 different plants)
(7) Seedbed tray (200 holes)

In terms of the seeds to be donated and planted for propagation, certain factors
that may hinder their growth and development are considered such as the intense
sunlight and rain. It will be purchased in a local shop. The following plants will be used:

(1) Okra
(2) Eggplant
(3) Pechay
(4) Tomato
(5) Chili pepper
(6) Mongo
(7) Onion

The estimated time for the construction of the nursery will be about one (1) week.
While the propagation of the seeds depends on the growth of the specific plant. The
project is expected to make vegetables available and free to be distributed in the
community as well as a contribution to environmental protection and climate change,
and a compliance to the UN SDG goals.

Attached below is the detailed plan of the nursery with its specifications as well
as the in-text description:
VIII. Objectives:

The objectives of this project are the following:

1. Establishing a Sustainable Nursery Infrastructure

This project is to create a physical nursery area that has the storage
spaces, shade structures, and irrigation systems that are required. When
building, sustainable materials, and eco-friendly procedures are followed. It will
also adopt effective waste management techniques on the nursery's property.

2. Cultivate Diverse and Nutritious Crop Varieties

This project aims to encourage the growth of fruits, vegetables, and herbs
to increase biodiversity. Nutrient-rich crop cultivation is the first priority as the
project will aid the community in ensuring food security through their community
garden.

3. Engage and Empower Community Members

This project will support community-led projects that promote involvement

and a sense of accountability and ownership among participants. Through this,
community members will be encouraged to participate and volunteer in
maintaining the nursery. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (2020),
Brgy. Lanit has a Youth Dependency Ratio of 50, which includes infants/babies,
children, and young adolescents/teenagers, make up an aggregate of 32.08%
(1,759) of the population, it is important to ensure their health which is why this
project would greatly benefit them. Through this project, food security will
empower the community as it gives them the assurance of receiving healthy and
safe food from the barangay.

Agriculture and will visit the nursery once a week for 2 months. Additionally, composting
and water conservation practices will be implemented to promote sustainability.
XII. Evaluation Procedure

A progress report will be given to the subject adviser and the punong barangay of
Brgy. Lanit. Included in this report are documentation of every activity done by the group
and the attendance of members.

Progress will be regularly monitored, and feedback from residents will be

collected to assess the project's impact. Adjustments will be made as necessary to
improve the garden's effectiveness and relevance to the community.
