Assignment-4

1. A reinforced concrete chimney 60 m high above ground has an outside diameter of

4.5 m. The thickness of concrete shell is 22 cm at the top increased to 28 cm and 32
cm and 40 cm at 20 m , 30 m and 45 m from the top . Vertical bars are 1.2 % of the
cross-sectional area throughout. The total wind load above the section top from may
be taken as 95 kN. Find the stresses developed due to wind and dead loads at the
section 20 m from top of the chimney. Assume modular ration m = 11.

2. A circular RCC chimney has a constant shell thickness of 300 mm and external
diameter of 4 m. The section is reinforced with 1.2 % steel located at 50 mm from
outer face. The temperature difference between the inside and outside face of
concrete is 700 C . Given That Est= 210 kN/mm2; Ec = 19 kN/mm2 ; for concrete and
steel = 11x 10 -6 / 0 c Compute the stresses developed in concrete and steel due to
temperature gradient.

3. A reinforced concrete chimney 60 m high above ground has an outside diameter of

5.0 m at base and 4.5 m at top . The thickness of concrete shell is 25 cm at the top
increased to 40 cm at base linearly . Vertical bars are 1.2 % of the cross-sectional area
throughout. The total wind load above the section top from may be taken as 95 kN.
Find the stresses developed due to wind and dead loads at the section 20 m from top
of the chimney. Assume modular ration m = 11.

4. A reinforced concrete chimney 80 m high above ground has an outside diameter of

4.5 m at top and 5.5 m at bottom is required to place at Raigarh ( Chattishgarh) . The
thickness of fire brick lining is 100 mm . The temperature difference between inside
and outside of shaft is = 80 0 C. Permissible bearing capacity at the site = 160 kN/m2 .
Adopt M – 30 concrete and Fe-500 steel and design the following.
( a ) Base section of chimney
( b ) Foundation for the chimney
