Session 1: Introduction to Excel Interface

Objective: Familiarize students with the Excel interface, understand the


basic structure of workbooks and worksheets, and navigate within Excel
effectively.

Duration: 1 hour

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

- Brief introduction of the instructor and students.

- Overview of the course objectives and structure.

- Importance of Excel in various fields (business, finance, data analysis,


etc.).

2. Overview of the Excel Interface (15 minutes)

- Excel Launch: How to open Excel.

- Excel Window Components:

- Title Bar: Displays the name of the workbook.

- Ribbon: Introduction to the Ribbon, which contains tabs (Home, Insert,


Page Layout, Formulas, Data, Review, View, Help).

- Tabs and Groups: Explanation of tabs and groups within the Ribbon, and
how they organize commands.

- Quick Access Toolbar: Customizing the Quick Access Toolbar for


frequently used commands.

- Formula Bar: Overview of the formula bar where you can enter and edit
data/formulas.

- Status Bar: Overview of the status bar at the bottom of the Excel window
which shows information like the sum, average, and count of selected cells.

3. Understanding Workbooks and Worksheets (15 minutes)

- Workbooks: Definition and purpose of a workbook.

- Worksheets: Explanation of worksheets within a workbook.

- Sheet Tabs: Navigating between different worksheets using sheet tabs at


the bottom.
- Adding, Renaming, and Deleting Sheets: How to manage sheets (add,
rename, move, copy, and delete worksheets).

4. Navigating Rows, Columns, and Cells (10 minutes)

- Rows and Columns: Identifying rows (horizontal, numbered) and columns


(vertical, lettered).

- Cells: Intersection of rows and columns.

- Cell References: Understanding cell references (e.g., A1, B2).

- Selecting Cells: How to select a single cell, a range of cells, entire rows,
and columns.

- Using the Name Box: Introduction to the Name Box for quickly selecting
cells.

5. Basic Navigation and Shortcuts (10 minutes)

- Mouse Navigation: Using the mouse to navigate within the worksheet.

- Keyboard Shortcuts: Introduction to basic keyboard shortcuts (e.g., Ctrl+C


for copy, Ctrl+V for paste, Ctrl+Z for undo, Ctrl+Y for redo).

- Scrolling: Using scroll bars and mouse wheel for navigation.

- Go To Function: Using the Go To function (Ctrl + G or F5) to quickly


navigate to a specific cell or range.

6. Hands-on Practice (5 minutes)

- Practical Exercise: Simple task to reinforce learning.

- Open Excel, create a new workbook.

- Navigate through tabs, explore commands in the Home tab.

- Add a few sheets, rename them, and delete one.

- Select various cells and ranges using both mouse and keyboard.
