STANDARD OPERATING PEOCESS FOR FLANGE

Flanges is method of connecting pipes, valve pump &other equipment to form

a piping system .it is also providing easy access for cleaning, inspection or
screwed. Flanges are usually welded or screwed. Flanged joints are made by
bolting together two flanges with gasket between to provide a seat.
TYPES OF FLANGES SPECIAL FLANGES
1] Welding Neck Flange. A] Orifice Flanges
2] Slip On Flange. B] long Welding Neck
3] Socket Weld Flange. C] Weldo Flange/Nipo Flange
4] Lap Joint Flange. D] Expander Flange
5] Threaded Flange.
6] Blind Flange.
1.Purpose

Standard Operating Procedure for:

 Visual Verification
 Dimensional Verification

2. Scope
This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) focuses on the way to perform a Basic
Verification Service. This service consists of comparison of the customer
requirements specifications with the material offered at the time of Verification.

3.Verification Procedure:
The Verification service involves checking material offered. All the documents
viz. P.O., QAP, Datasheet, Drawings, approved by customer is referred at the time
of verification.
Following are the checks carried out during verification:

3.1 Visual Verification: Visual Verification is carried out with reference to the
P.O. requirements. In this case the Model number (Order Code), Tag number (if
applicable). Validation is also made with reference to the customer/consultant
approved datasheet specification.

3.2-Dimensional Verification: Dimensional Verification is carried out with

reference to approved drawings/E+H Technical catalogue/ Standards as applicable
All the dimensions of brought out material are checked with respect to standard
drawings.

3.3 Local material will be inward at warehouse only after clearance from Quality
team after Quality check
Threaded Flanges: -
Threaded flanges are also known as screwed flanges and it is having a thread
inside the flange bore which fits on the pipe with matching male thread on the pipe
this type of joint connection is speedy and simple but not suitable for high pressure
and temperature applications. Threaded flanges are mostly used in utility services
such as air and water.

Slip on Flanges: -
Slip on flange has a hole with matching outside diameter of pipe from which
pipe can pass. The flange is placed on pipe & fillet welded from both inside &
outside slip on flanges is suitable for low pressure & temperature application, this
type of flanges is available in large size also to connect big bore piping with
storage tank nozzles. normally, these flanges are of forged construction & are
provided with the hub, sometimes these flanges are fabricated from plates & are
not provided with the hub.

SOCKET WELD FLANGES: -
Socket weld flange has a female socket in which pipe is fitted, fillet welding
is done from outside on the pipe. Generally, it is used in small bore piping & only
suitable for low pressure temperature application.

LAP JOINT FLANGES: -

Lap flange is having two component a stub end and a loose backing flange stub
end is butt welded to the pipe & backing flange freely move over the pipe. The
backing flange can be of different material then stub material & normally of the
carbon steel to save the cost. Lap flange is used where frequent dismantling is
required and space is constrained.

WELD NECK FLANGES:-
Weld neck flanges are most widly used flanged in process piping. It gives
the highest level of joint integrity due to butt welded with a pipe. These types of
flanges are used in high pressure & temperature application. Weld-neck flanges are
bulky & costly with respect to other types of flanges.

BLIND FLANGES: -
The blind flange is a blank disk with bolt hole these types of flange are used
with another type of flange to isolate the piping system or to terminate the piping
as an end blind flanges are also used as a manhole cover in vessel.

FLANGES FACING TYPES:-
(1) Flat Face [FF]
(2) Raised Face [RF]
(3) Ring Joint [RTJ]
(4) Tongue & Groove [T&G]

FLANGE PRESSURE TEMERATURE CLASS (SERVICE RATING)

Flanges are classified as per their pressure-temperature ratings as
150#,300#,400#,600#,900#,1500#,2500#, large diameter flanges that is 24’’ to 60’’
are available up to 900# pressure temperature ratings are maximum allowable
working gauge pressure in the bar & the temperature in ℃
Higher the rating heavier the flange & can withstand higher pressure &
temperature goes down & vice-versa. Please note that different material has
different pressure rating

FLANGES MATERIAL: -
Flanges are manufacture from
1) Carbon Steel
2) Low Steel
3) Stainless Steel
4) Combination & Exotic Material (Stub)
5) List of material used to manufacture flanges is covered in ASME B16.5 &
B16.47
6) ASME B16.5 pipe flanges &Flanges fiting NPS ½’’ to 24’’
7) ASME B 16.47 Large diameter steel flange NPS 26’’ to 60’’
MARKING: -
Following shall be marked on flange body
(1) Manufacturing logo
(2) ASTM material code
(3) Material grade
(4) Service rating (pressure-temp class)
(5) Size
(6) Thickness
(7) Heat no
(8) Special marking if any QT (quenched & tempered) or W(Repair by
Welding)
