1 PRODUCTION

What’s New
FARM TOOLS IN AGRONOMIC CROP PRODUCTION

Farm tools, implements, and equipment play a very important role in agricultural
crop production. Their availability makes the work much easier and faster.

2
However, even if one may have the most sophisticated tools and implements, but
does not know how to use them, they are useless. In order to do crop production
operations successfully, one must have a good working knowledge of the tools,
implements and equipment before using them.

What is it
Hand Tools
Hand tools are usually light and are used without the help of animals or machines.
They are being used in performing farm activities which involve small areas like
school gardens and home gardens.

Bolo is used for cutting tall grasses

and weeds and chopping branches of
trees.

Crowbar is used for digging big holes

and for digging out big stones and
stumps.

Pick-mattock is used for digging

canals, breaking hard topsoil and for
digging up stones and tree stumps.

Grab-hoe is used for breaking hard

topsoil and pulverizing soil.

Farm Implements

These are accessories which are being pulled by working animals or mounted to

machineries (hand tractor, tractor) which are usually used in the preparation of
land. These are usually made of a special kind of metal.

Examples are:

A. Plows. These are farm implements either pulled by a working animal or a

tractor. The plow is specifically used for tilling large areas, making furrows
and inter row cultivation. Plows pulled by working animals are made of either
a combination of metal and wood or pure metal. They are used to till areas
with a shallower depth than that of the disc plows which are pulled by
tractors.

B. Harrow. The native wooden harrow is made of wood with a metal teeth and
pulled by a carabao while the disc harrow is made of metal mounted to a
tractor. Harrows are used for tilling and pulverizing the soil.

PROPER USE OF SHOVEL

Shovels are used in different farm operations. It is used in digging and moving
soil from one place to another, cleaning ditches, etc. Proper use of this tool can
help make the work easier.

PPE and Tools needed:

i. Footwear
ii. Long pants
iii. Gloves
iv. Rag
v. Shovel
Procedure:
Make sure that before you perform this activity, you are wearing appropriate
personal protective equipment. Follow these instructions.

1. Keep feet wide apart. Place front foot close to

shovel

2. Put weight on the front foot. Use your

legs to push the shovel.

3. Shift weight to rear foot. Keep the

load close to the body.

4. Turn feet in direction of throw

5. Perform housekeeping

COMMON EQUIPMENT IN
2 AGRONOMIC CROP PRODUCTION

COMMON FARM EQUIPMENT

These are machineries used in crop production. They are used in land preparation
and in transporting farm inputs and products. The following equipment needs a
highly skilled operator to use.

Hand tractor is used to pull a plow and harrow in

preparing a large area of land.

Four wheel tractor is used to pull a disc plow and disc

harrow in preparing a much bigger area of land.

Water pumps are used to draw irrigation water from a

source.

Thresher is a piece of farm equipment that threshes

grain, that is, it removes the seeds from the stalks and
husks. It does so by beating the plant to make the
seeds fall out.

The Corn Dehusker machine is used to peel the skin

of corn and make the maize removed from the cob.

8
The Rice/Corn Combine
Harvester makes the
harvesting process easier by
combining six operations such
as gathering, transporting,
reaping, threshing, cleaning
and bagging into one machine.
It is the modern and efficient
way of harvesting rice. It also
provides our farmers comfort
in operation and ease in
maintaining their machines.
With a rice combine harvester,
farmers have the power to http://adamco.ph/ricecombineharvest
harvest at their own time of
choosing –no need to
wait for available labor and no need to worry about approaching typhoons.

ADVANTAGES

1. Increase in income because of reduction of percentage of grain loss from

10% to less than 1%
2. Reduction of labor cost – only 3 people required from original 12 people
3. Harvesting capacity is 4 to 5 hectares per day
4. Additional income through servicing of other farmers – average RCH rental
fee is P 10 000 per hectare
5. RCH can work in knee-deep mud and extremely dry field

A Grass Cutter is a machine that cuts grass.

What I Have Learned

1. What are farm tools used in agronomic crop production?

2. What is the difference between tools and equipment?
3. What are the uses of those equipment in agronomic crop production?

What I Can Do

SCRAPBOOK ON FARM EQUIPMENT

After learning the different farm equipment, you will be compiling pictures of farm
equipment and its instructional manual.

Make a portfolio using your old notebook or you can have your portfolio online using
canva.com. If you have your portfolio, send the link online to your teacher or take
a picture of your notebook portfolio and send the picture to your teacher.

1. Collect pictures of at least (5) farm equipment and instructional

manuals. You may clip pictures from the internet.
2. For the pictures taken from online sites, copy the URL and paste below
the pictures.
3. Cut the pictures and paste it on a short bond paper
4. Search the uses or functions of this equipment and write it below or
beside the pictures.
5. If the instructional manuals are available, paste it on another bond paper.
6. Compile the sheets into 1 folder.
7. Submit it to your teacher.
