and concept of visha

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION
• Undesirable change in physical, chemical, or biological characteristics
of any component of environment
• Air
• Water
• Soil / Land
which can cause harmful effects on various forms of life or
property.
Human activities have an adverse effect on the environment by
polluting the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the soil in
which plants grow.
TYPES OF POLLUTION
• Most common form of pollution.…primary reasons are
cooking,transportation and other industrial activities.
• Its impact not only on climate change but also its impact on
public and individual health due to increasing morbidity and
mortality.
• Air pollution can have a disastrous effect on all components
of the environment, including groundwater, soil, and air.
Air Pollutants
• Pollutants are harmful solids, liquids, or gases produced in higher than
usual concentrations that reduce the quality of our environment.
• The World Health Organization (WHO) reports on six major air
pollutants
1. Particle pollution,
2. Ground-level ozone,
3. Carbon monoxide,
4. Sulfur oxides,
5. Nitrogen oxides,
6. Lead.
Particulate Matter (PM)
• Particulate contaminants include contaminants such as smog, soot,
tobacco smoke, oil smoke, fly ash, and cement dust.
• long-term exposure- cardiovascular diseases and infant mortality
Ozone Impact in the Atmosphere
• harmful for cultures, forests, and vegetation as it is reducing carbon
assimilation .
• reduces growth and yield and affects the plant microflora due to its
antimicrobial capacity .
• increases DNA damage in epidermal keratinocytes and leads to
impaired cellular function
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
• headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, and, loss of
consciousness.
• affects the greenhouses gases that are tightly connected to global
warming and climate.
• increase in soil and water temperatures, and extreme weather
conditions or storms.
Nitrogen Oxide
• It is an irritant of the respiratory system as it penetrates deep in the
lung, inducing respiratory diseases, coughing, wheezing, dyspnea,
bronchospasm
• concentrations higher than 2.0 ppm affect T-lymphocytes, particularly
the CD8+ cells and NK cells that produce our immune response
• long-term exposure - chronic lung disease & can impair the sense of
smell .
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)
• respiratory irritation,
• bronchitis,
• bronchospasm, bronchoconstriction,
• skin redness,
• damage to the eyes (lacrimation and corneal opacity) and mucous
membranes
• worsening of pre-existing cardiovascular disease .
Lead
• Exposure to lead - inhalation, ingestion, and dermal absorption.
• Trans- placental transport
• Lead toxicity affects the fetal nervous system
• when inhaled, accumulates in the blood, soft tissue, liver, lung, bones,
and cardiovascular, nervous, and reproductive systems.
• loss of concentration and memory, muscle and joint pain.
Effect of Air Pollution on Health
Short-term effects
• irritation of the eyes, nose, skin, throat,
• wheezing, coughing and chest tightness
• breathing difficulties,
• asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, and lung and heart problems.
• headaches, nausea, and dizziness.
long-term exposure
• harmful to the neurological, reproductive, and respiratory systems and
causes cancer
WATER POLLUTION
Major sources of water pollution
• Domestic sewage
• Industrialization
• Population growth
• Pesticides and fertilizers
• Plastics and polythene bags
• Urbanization
• Weak management system
Effects of water pollution on human health
• respiratory disease,
• cancer,
• diarrheal disease,
• neurological disorder and cardiovascular disease
• Nitrogenous chemicals - cancer and blue baby syndrome
• Bacterial diseases
• Campylobacter jejuni - Fever, abdominal pain, nausea, headache are
major symptoms of diarrhea.
• Vibrio Cholerae - watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and watery
diarrhea leads to dehydration and renal failure.
• Shigella bacteria - Watery or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps,
vomiting and nausea .
• Salmonella bacteria - inflammation of intestine and often death occurs.
• Viral diseases
• Hepatitis
• Encephalitis
• Poliomyelitis virus
• Gastroenteritis is caused by different viruses including rotaviruses,
adenoviruses, calciviruses and Norwalk virus.
• Parasitic diseases
• cryptosporidium parvum - symptoms are diarrhea, loose or watery
bowls, stomach cramps and upset stomach
• Entamoeba histolytica - Symptoms are fever, chills and watery
diarrhea.
• Giardia lamblia - symptoms bloating, excess gas, watery diarrhea and
weight loss
Causes of Soil Pollution
• increasing use of chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, insecticides
and fertilizers .
• Increasing salinity
• Loss of minerals
Effects of soil pollution on human health
• carcinogenic.
• regular exposure to benzene - leukemia in both children and adults
• exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) - liver cancer
• neuromuscular blockage as well as depression of the central nervous
system
• headaches, nausea, fatigue, eye irritation and skin rash
Cont….
• heavy metals in soil in toxic amounts can cause irreversible
developmental damage in children.
• lead and mercury - damage to the developing brains of young children
• excessive mercury in soil - kidney or liver damage
• high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus can leach into waterways,
causing algal blooms, resulting in the death of aquatic plants due to
depleted dissolved oxygen

• The dropping of birds from the sky to the earth below in a

tired condition is a distinct indication of the wind and the
smoke being charged with poison.
• It is further attended with an attack of cough, catarrh,
headache and of severe eye disease in those who inhale the
smoke.
Treatment:
• Laksha Haridradi Yoga
• Atmosphere should be purified by burning quantities of laksha, haridra,
ativisha, abhaya, abda, renuka, ela, dala, vakra, kushta and priyangu in
the open ground. The fumes of these drugs would purify the anila and
the dhuma from the poison.

• The poisoned water becomes slimy, strong smelling, frothy and marked with
black coloured lines on the surface.
• Frogs and fish living in the water die without any apparent cause.
• Birds and beasts that live in the water and its shores roam about wildly in
confusion
• Men, horses or elephants by bathing in this water are afflicted with vomiting,
fainting, fever, burning sensation and swelling in the limbs.
Treatment:
• Dhava Ashwakarnadi Yoga:
• The cold ashes of the drugs- dhava, ashwakarna, asana, paribhadra, patala,
siddhaka, mokshaka, rajadruma and somavalka are burnt together and should
be cast into the poisoned pool or tank where by its water would be purified.
An anljali measure of the said ash cast in a ghata measure of water would
purify it.

• A poisoned ground or stone slab, desert or county side would give rise
to swelling in those parts of the bodies of men, bullocks, horses, asses,
camels and elephants that may chance to come in contact with them.
• In such cases, a burning sensation is felt in the affected part and hair
and nails of these parts fall off.
Treatment:
• In these cases, the poisoned surface should be purified by sprinkling it
over with a solution of ananta and sarvagandha dissolved in wine or
with black clay dissolved with water or with decoction of vidanga,
patha and katabhi.
