Introduction
Though the construction and engineering industry
is infused with high-tech, when we discuss dig-
ital transformation, we are primarily referring to
the implementation of BIM - Building Information
Modeling. BIM is one of the most promising devel-
opments in the AEC (architecture, engineering, and
construction) industries.

What is BIM
The concept of BIM has existed ever since the 1970’s, with the
first software tools developed for modeling buildings emerging
in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. In the BIM Handbook [1] by Chuck
Eastman et al., ‘the father of BIM’, BIM was defined as “a mod-
eling technology and associated process to produce, communi-
cate, and analyze building models”. Simply put, BIM is a digital
building process for creating and managing information on a con-
struction project throughout its lifecycle.

02 What is BIM
Despite being a massive consumer of raw materials and natural resources and generating 38% [3] of the
world’s carbon emissions, the engineering and construction industry is gradually becoming more sustaina-
ble. In a recent global survey by SAP and Oxford Economics across multiple sectors including the AEC, ex-
ecutives in the engineering and construction industries have made the most progress toward sustainability
in the design phase, where 47% [4] of respondents said sustainability is top-of-mind or a major concern.
Together with Building Transparency’s EC3 technology, RIB’s RIB CostX solution has introduced an embod-
ied carbon calculator [5] allowing industry professionals to quantify, measure, report on and compare em-
bodied carbon across a project’s lifecycle. It’s the solution that integrates embodied carbon accounting with
cost estimating.
RIB’s Presto solution and Tecniberia participated in the development of HueCO2 [6], an application that helps
calculate the carbon footprint of building projects. It consists of a Database of Emission Factors (BDFE) in
which display the emission factors of the main materials and machines involved in projects.

BIM + Cloud
One significant challenge we are seeing in the AEC industry is collaboration. For instance, different teams in
different locations in different disciplines and in different phases working on the same project, need to col-
laborate, which is by default a challenge. BIM deployed on the cloud rectifies this issue, enabling collabo-
ration in real-time, regardless of time and location, meaning teams communicate much more efficiently, and
identify and mitigate risks faster. In addition, cloud-based BIM also means a high levels of security, as well
as greater cost savings, as most cloud computing services are pay-as-you-go.

The ISO 19650 suite of standards [7] has been developed to help the construction industry adopt BIM on an
international level. It contains all the same principles and high-level requirements as UK BIM Framework and
is closely aligned with the current UK 1192 standards.
The overall objective of the Standard is to ensure that the right people work on the right information at the
right time. This is achieved through setting an internationally recognized best practice for the creation, col-
laboration, and management of asset information. Ultimately, it ensures that built environment projects are
delivered on time, within budget and to standard.

03 Why BIM is Indispensable and Where Do You Start
With 55% of the world’s population currently living in urban areas, it is a proportion that is expected to
increase to 68% by 2050 [9]. Projections show that urbanization combined with the overall growth of the
world’s population could add another 2.5 billion people to urban areas by 2050. By 2030, the world is pro-
jected to have 43 megacities with more than 10 million inhabitants, most of them in developing regions.
While one in eight people live in 33 megacities worldwide, close to half of the world’s urban dwellers reside
in much smaller settlements with fewer than 500,000 inhabitants.
What does this mean? For the next three decades, millions of people will move to cities every week and
thousands of buildings and their according infrastructure need to be built every single day to meet this de-
mand. Equipped with BIM, mega projects are completed in a faster, smarter, and greener fashion.

03 Why BIM is Indispensable and Where Do You Start
If we stay where we are and don’t innovate, we will be disrupted by other players, perhaps for
example, even by non-traditional construction players from other industries. Corporate cross-
over is on the rise and it is inevitable that by using machine learning, AI, and digitalization, that
corporate players, so far excluded from construction, will seek ways to break into what up till
now has been considered a closed shop. Simply put, if we don’t ‘Uber’ ourselves, we will even-
tually get ‘Kodaked’.
Unlike traditional methods, characterized by changes and unforeseen costs both within the de-
sign and building phases, BIM methodology facilitates efficient collaboration based on a virtual
model between all stakeholders involved, from the project’s get-go. As can be seen in the Ma-
cLeamy curve [10] diagram below, when a greater collaborative BIM effort is concentrated at the
initial stages of the design phase, it has a positive impact on cost, both in terms of cost aware-
ness and cost reduction.
To remain competitive in a competitive marketplace, both young companies and those with
decades of experience have to invest in BIM-based software solutions to transform their tech-
nical and commercial processes.

03 Why BIM is Indispensable and Where Do You Start
The first step in Change Management starts with CEO. It’s very important that the CEO is the per-
son who pushes this through and from Day One. CEOs must be the ones to have the vision and the
understanding of future trends, and to implicitly anticipate what tomorrow’s clients expect.
Once the digitalization commitment runs from top to bottom, senior management can establish
a clear vision for the change management and digital transformation process to take place.
“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!” Digital transformation is a big deal and so
implementing change throughout the entire organization can be challenging. This is especially
true when over half of employees have never worked with construction management software.
That’s why starting with ‘smaller pieces’ can be a more practical method. Thus, the first step
for many contractors could be to start digitalization within their design or planning teams to
develop the working methods, workflows, and standards, that other departments, such as es-
timate, procurement, and business partner management, will inevitably work with, pushing it
down the line to these other teams.
www.rib-software.com 12
03 Why BIM is Indispensable and Where Do You Start
After the design or planning department is digitalized, the next step is to bring more de-
partments into the BIM model-based workflows, for instance, cost estimation, procure-
ment, and site teams. In the end, you’ll have one company that is completely digitally inte-
grated, having standardized workflows and connected data for enterprise-wide projects.
The ISO 19650 suite of standards has been developed to help the construction industry
adopt BIM on an international level. It is an international standard for managing informa-
tion over the whole life cycle of a built asset using BIM.
The overall objective of the standard is to ensure that the right people work on the right
information at the right time. This is achieved through setting an internationally recognized
best practice for the creation, collaboration, and management of asset information. Ulti-
mately, it ensures that built environment projects are delivered on time, within budget and
to standard.

partners so that we can get the most optimal project flow. The choice of software is a natural part of this
