IP2.

Show that 𝒚 = 𝒂 𝒄𝒐𝒔(𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃) is a solution of the differential

𝒅𝟐 𝒚
equation + 𝒎𝟐 𝒚 = 𝟎, where 𝒂, 𝒃 are arbitrary
𝒅𝒙𝟐
constants.

Solution:
𝑑2𝑦 2
Given that 2 + 𝑚 𝑦 = 0 ……. (1)
𝑑𝑥

Also given that 𝑦 = 𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏)

Differentiating 𝑦 w.r.t , we get
𝑑𝑦
𝑑𝑥
= −𝑚𝑎 𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏) ……. 2

Differentiating (2) w.r.t 𝑥, we get

𝑑2𝑦
= −𝑚2 𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏) ……… 3
𝑑𝑥 2

Substitute (2) and (3) in (1), we get

−𝑚2 𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑠 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 + −𝑚2 𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑠 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 = 0
⟹ 0 = 0 which is true.
Hence, 𝑦 = 𝑎 𝑐𝑜𝑠(𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏) is a solution (1).
