Presentation Fall 2024
Presentation Fall 2024
Purpose:
Students will make personal connections to visual art mediums and themes.
Students will demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge from the course to find their
own artistic preferences through styles and specific artist’s works.
Requirements:
This is not a strict biography but do include pertinent information about the artist. To
build this component, do not simply visit the artist’s Wikipedia page.
Situate the artist’s work. Make some larger argument about how to view this artist are
artwork in theoretical or historical terms. Why is their work significant, and under what
conditions has it come to be this way? What questions does the artist’s work raise?
Do many drafts. Determine how you read best: from cue cards, from a strict script, etc.
Avoid the phrase “I didn’t know that [insert fact here].” Instead, activate your
observations—tell us what they mean for your research process, for your practice, or
(be ambitious!) for art history/history/contemporary art.
Place your observations in the context of your own interests. Draw from the
constellation of your own emerging ideas and actively mix this with your research
material—Make it textured and interesting. In short, I want to hear your opinion.
What to include:
Description
Background of the Artist. Where are they from, how were they trained, etc.
Detailed description of what method was used to by the artist to create the art
Describe how the elements and principles work together to create the art.
What do you think is the purpose of the artwork.
Does it tell a story, teach a moral, speak out against something, etc.
Use the title as your clue and include any information you can find through research
either on the artwork or on the style the artist traditionally works.
Judgment
