Final exam on Analysis 1. Duration : One hour and half.
Exercise 1.
This exercise contains four statements, each one of them is either true or false. Say, for
each one, if it is true or false and give the required justification.
a) If the subsequences (u2n )n and (u2n+1 )n converge then (un )n converges.
b) If (un )n is increasing and not bounded above then limn→+∞ un = +∞
c) If limn→+∞ un+1 − un = 0, then (un )n is convergent.
d) The function f is continuous on the interval I if and only if it is uniformly conti-
nuous on I.
Exercise 2.
Let f : R → R be a given function defined by :

1

n

 x sin if x < 0;

 x
f (x) = cos(π(ln x))
 if x > 0;
 2 + ln x

0 if x = 0,
where n is a positive and fixed integer, i.e. n ∈ N.
a) Compute the domain of definition of f denoted by D.
b) Discuss the continuity of f over D.
c) Does f admit an extension by continuity at x0 = e−2 ?
Exercise 3.
Let the set A defined by :
(−1)n + 1

A = cos + 2 ;n ∈ N .
2 n +n+1
a) Prove that the set A is bounded.
b) Compute sup A ; inf A ; max A and min A if there exist.
Exercise 4.
Let (un )n be a sequence which satisfies
∀n ∈ N? , |un+1 − un | ≤ α|un − un−1 |,
where α ∈]0, 1[ is a real number.
a) Prove, by induction, that :
∀n ∈ N : |un+1 − un | ≤ αn |u1 − u0 |.
b) Prove that if p and q are two positives integers such that p < q then
αq
|up − uq | ≤ |u1 − u0 |. (1)
1−α
c) Deduce that (un )n satisfies the criterion Cauchy. Is the converse true, that means :
If we assume that (un )n satisfies the criterion of Cauchy, do we have the relation
(1) ?
d) Application : Prove that the sequence (un )n defined by : For each n ∈ N : un+1 =
1
((un )2 + 8) is convergent.
