Final Term Examination

4th Semester Civil Engineering, Spring 2020

CE-212: Fluid Mechanics – II

Time: One Week Total Marks : 50

Note: Assume reasonable values for any missing data. Symbols have their usual meaning
unless otherwise stated. Reg.No means your registration number.

Q#1 The head-discharge relationship for a centrifugal pump is provided by the manufacturer
as

Q, m3/s 0 1E-6 2E-6 3E-6 4E-6 5E-6

H, mm 1.1 1.0 0.8 0.6 0.35 0

The pipe is Reg.No/100 m long and has a diameter of 5 mm. Neglect the minor losses.
The temperature of water is 20 oC. If the pump is used to pump water from the lower
reservoir to the higher reservoir as shown in Fig. 1, compute the maximum achievable
discharge?

Q#2 The 5-in diameter water jet as shown in Fig. 2, moving at Reg.No/100 ft/sec, is split so
that one-third of the water moves towards A. Compute the magnitude and direction of
the resultant force on the stationary splitter. The temperature of water is 20 oC.

Q#3 The water tank shown in the Fig. 3 has the form of the frustum of cone. If the tank is
full of water at a depth of Reg.No/100 ft. Analyze for the time to completely empty the
tank. The discharge coefficient of the orifice is 0.60 [CLO 3, Marks: 10]

Q#4 Consider an impulse turbine with a pitch diameter of 2 m and a bucket angle of 𝛽2 of
165o. If the water jet velocity is Reg.No/100 m/s, the jet diameter 108 mm, and the
rotative speed 375 rpm. Analyze (a) the force on the buckets, (b) the torque on the
runner, and (c) the power transferred to the runner. Assume that the bucket loss
coefficient is 0.6. Calculate the hydraulic efficiency of the flow through the buckets.
[CLO 3, Marks 10]

Q#5 (a) The structure shown in Fig. 4 consists of three cylindrical support posts to which an
elliptical flat-plate sign is attached. Analyze the drag on the structure when a
Reg.No/100-mph wind blows against it. Assume Tair = 60 oF, CD, Disc = 1.1 and
CD, posts = 0.5 [CLO 3, Marks 05]

(b) Three pipes 1, 2, and 3 are 300 m of 30-cm-diameter, 150 m of 20-cm-diameter, and
250 m of 25-cm-diamater are connected in series. If the total head loss is Reg.No/100
m, Compute the rate of flow from A to B. Assume f1 = 0.019, f2 = 0.021, and
f3 = 0.020 [CLO 2, Marks 05]
