What Makes a “Good” Officer
Write a 500-600 word paper, where you discuss what you think makes a “good” police officer.
In your paper also include a discussion on:
Characteristics of a “good” officer.
Give an example of an officer that you have seen with these characteristics. This may be in
person or on television.

A police officer is a person who protects hundreds of people every day. A police officer not only has to
be very strong willed but also have to work in all the pressurized times as well. A good police officer is
the one who is professional on the job as well as off the job. A good officer should be quick to react in all
the situations. A police officer should be very faithful towards his country so that nobody can bribe him
to sell his morals etc. it’s must he is able to interact well with the public and not to hold any kind of
grudges against the people. One bad officer can corrupt the whole department and all the good officers
can go on wrong track seeing him. He should be able to use his brains to make good judgment and solve
his problems. He should not be very harsh and ruthless also. His capacity for multi tasking and for
empathy and compassion make him different from all the other officers. A good officer is the one who is
are able to absorb any kind of punishments and can handle the physical altercations with the force that
is adequate.
Some of the characteristics of good officer are:-
1) Courage: - a good police officer should be very courageous and not get scared in any
circumstance. If he himself will lose hope than how will he save life of other people
courage allows the cop to be a more aggressive street cop. A cop has to work in much
different circumstance like hide in bushes, raid some drug place etc so this all requires
huge courage. Having courage also gives full confidence to the officers to undergo any
mission and gives their best
2) Training: - training is the most essential element to be a good cop. It doesn’t matter
much how strong a cop is, how smart he is but the most is how he adapt to through the
fluid situation in which the cops land themselves. He has to be very quick which can only
be provided with high quality raining. Training like force on force training helps them to
prepare them for all the tough situations and more importantly prepare them for stressful
situations. Having less stress during any accident allows them to think more clearly and
plan their next step more carefully. ( Rayburn, 2013)
The great example of a great cop was in 21 jump street which was played by Channing Tatum as
Gregory "Greg" Jenko. He plays a well trained officer but also slow witted police officer who is
transferred to 21 Jump Street with his partner and also high school enemy Morton Schmidt. He plays the
role of a tough cop who is on an uncover mission .His undercover identity is Brad McQuaid. He in the
movie depicts all the above characteristics of a good police officer due to which he was liked by all his
audiences and fans.
