Concepts of Mental Health and Mental Hygiene

Mental hygiene is the study of the development of the mind. It is a science that
deals with promoting, maintaining, and restoring mental health. By adopting and
applying sets of hygienic principles and measures, it aims to prevent and reduce
mental illness. Unlike physical health where one can be immunized against
diseases and remain so for several years, in mental hygiene, it takes much more
to modify deep-seated feelings, attitude and action patterns.

Mental hygiene is a science made up of facts and principles embodied in a

program. Mental health is the state of the individual towards which the program
is directed. The science of mental hygiene is the means aimed at the
preservation of one's mental health

Mental health on the other hand, is a state of balance between an individual's

needs, aspirations and attitude in relation to his/her external environment. It is
more than just a sound mind in a sound body (mens sana in corpore sano). It is a
state that is intimately related to the whole human existence. It is also meant
keeping the personality whole, while one faces reality in both losing and
victorious situations; and thus function effectively in a dynamic society.

Importance and Aspects of Mental Health

The study and understanding of the principles of mental hygiene is important to

family and professional life for the principles explains the mechanics of human
motivation and behavior. Parents, teachers, and other professionals can use its
principles to direct and guide the behavior and attitudes of the youth as they go
through the different stages of growth.

It will help a person understand oneself better. As the individual studies his or
her basic biological and psychological drives, the reason for these are realized.
As the workings of the unconscious mind are studied, many of the inner tensions
are explained. In the process, one's strength and weaknesses are assessed; and
attitudes that help maintain a balanced perspective on healthful living, mentally
and physically, are developed.

Mental hygiene can suggest preventive measures, as well as remedies,

regarding many social problems such as delinquency, alcoholism, and drug
addiction.

Factors Affecting Mental Health and Its Approaches

Mental health problems can have a wide range of causes. It's likely that for many
people there is a complicated combination of factors-although different people
may be more deeply affected by certain things than others.

For example, the following factors could potentially result in a period of poor
mental health:

 childhood abuse, trauma, or neglect

 social isolation or loneliness

 experiencing discrimination and stigma

 social disadvantage, poverty or debt

 bereavement (losing someone close to you)

 severe or long-term stress

 having a long-term physical health condition

 unemployment or losing your job homelessness or poor housing

 being a long-term career for someone

 drug and alcohol misuse

 domestic violence, bullying or other abuse as an adult

 significant trauma as an adult, such as military combat, being involved in

a serious incident in which you feared for your life, or being the victim of a
violent come

 physical causes-for example, a head injury or a neurological condition

such as epilepsy can have an impact on your behavior and mood. (It's
important to rule out potential physical causes before seeking further
treatment for a mental health problem).

Although lifestyle factors inducing work, diet, drugs and lack of sleep can all
affect your mental health, if you experience a mental health problem there are
usually other factors as well.

There are certain approaches to mental hygiene and the task of influencing
human adjustment toward the promotion of mental health can be achieved
through the following ways:

1. The preventive approach or the prophylactic hygiene

This approach of mental hygiene is concerned with staying away from mental
disturbances that may lead to real psychoses. This begins in the home and
school. It Includes the establishment of a wholesome parent-child relationship,
and a school environment conducive to the development of the child's interests
and inherent capabilities. It also includes an information program outlining the
causes of mental illness and appropriate treatments to improve mental health.
This aims to develop well- adjusted personalities through wholesome
environmental influences that will enable people to attain emotional maturity.
For example, warm, accepting, and affectionate parents create interpersonal
relations that helps produce happy, well-adjusted children.

2. The therapeutic approach or ameliorative approach.

It aims to correct minor behavioral maladjustment so that these do not develop

into serious handicaps. Example of cases such as this is that when there are
students who receive early training at home and study in respectable high
standard schools yet become delinquents and with behavioral difficulties. This
minor maladjustment may arise from changes in a person's social and personal
environment.

3. The curative or the preventive psychiatry.

The oldest and most technical approach to behavior problems. This involves the
detection and correction of serious maladjustment problems, which does not
require hospitalization by trained mental hygienists (like psychiatrist and clinical
psychologists).

Signs and Symptoms of Poor/Failing Mental Health

Anxiety a prolonged, severe feeling that something unpleasant is about to

happen when there is no apparent cause of worry.

Depression a sickness that involve the body, thoughts, and mood of a person;
