QUE S T I O N S A N D A N S W E R S ( physics form four )

Chapter one
1. Define periodic motion?
❖ Periodic motion is a motion of an object that regularly returns to a given position
after a fixed time interval
2. What is the potential energy?
❖ potential energy is equal to the product of average applied force & the displacement
3. Define simple harmonic motion?
❖ simple harmonic motion is a motion in which a body moves back and forth over a
fixed path , returning to each position and velocity after a definite interval of time
❖ simple harmonic motion this is a type of motion under the influence of restoring
force described by the hooke,s law
4. What is the difference b/w displacement of SHM & Amplitude?
❖ displacement of SHM is the distance from equilibrium position in either direction
❖ Amplitude is the maximum displacement from mean position in either direction
5. Define simple pendulum?
❖ simple pendulum is a device used to measure a time
❖ simple pendulum is a mass on the end of a string which oscillates in harmonic motion
6. Distinguish b/w period and frequency?
❖ Period is the time taken to make one complete cycle
❖ Frequency is the number of cycle made in one second
7. Mention the period of simple pendulum depends on?
The period of simple pendulum depends on
❖ The length of the string
❖ The acceleration due to gravity
8. Define hooke,s law?
❖ hooke,s law states that the restoring force applied by a spring is proportional to the
Displacement of the spring and opposite in direction

9. list the period of simple harmonic motion depends on
The period of simple harmonic motion depends on
❖ The mass of the vibrating body
❖ The force constant of the spring
10. Define oscillatory motion?
❖ oscillatory motion is defined as the to and fro motion of an object from its mean
position
11. What is the difference between velocity and acceleration?
❖ Velocity this is the rate of change of displacement per unit time
❖ Acceleration it is the change of velocity per unit time
12. How can obtain the equations of simple harmonic motion?
❖ The equations of motion for an object in SHM can be found from a relationship b/w
simple harmonic and uniform circular motion
13. Define the following terms a) Restoring force b) kinetic energy
❖ Restoring force is a force which acts to bring a body to its equilibrium position
❖ kinetic energy is the energy of any moving object which is proportional to the
square of the velocity of that object
14. Explain when the following becomes zero a) velocity b) acceleration
❖ Velocity is zero at the end points and a maximum at the midpoint in either direction
❖ Acceleration is a maximum at the end points and it is zero at the center of oscillation
15. What is the total energy?
❖ The total energy of an object in simple harmonic is directly proportional to the
Square of the amplitude
16. State the si unit of the following a) spring constant b) frequency c) period
d) Force e) mass f) angular frequency
❖ a) N/m b) HZ c) sec d) N e) kg f) rad/sec
17. What is the angular frequency?
❖ Angular frequency is defined as angular displacement per unit time
