Selecting the right type of a house for poultry is the first and most important
decision to make. The right choice of poultry house allows efficient production
of birds and eggs within a stress free environment and maximum economy of
food. We shall talk about factors to consider when constructing a chicken house.

To begin with, selecting a suitable site is important. The selected site must take
advantage of natural air movements. The house must be accessible from a good
weather road to enable a farmer to transport inputs bought and produce to the
market. Reliable source of clean, piped water and electricity from main supplies
are essential. Drainages must be considered from the point of view of poultry
health. Avoid sites which are prone to water- lodging, because it blocks air
movements. Consider direction of sunlight, rainfall and cold droughts.

Take note on how you lay your foundation. The foundation depth is determined
by the physical condition of the ground, soil and the weight of materials to be
used. The foundation depth should be large enough to allow one man to work in
comfortably. It should be six hundred centimetres wide and four hundred
centimetres deep. Put concrete on the floor to provide rodent proof surface. This
floor can be easily washed or disinfected. The floor level should be two hundred
metres above the floor.

The house should be open sided. These houses are very important because they
allow free movement of air. Where chickens are overcrowded, it is easy to get
affected by diseases and other infections; however ventilation reduces the risk
of catching infections and diseases.

Roofing is also important aspect to consider. The chicken house should be well
thatched to provide fire proof and rodent proof environment. Gable roofs with
ridge openings to provide good ventilation are good for chicken houses.
Ventilations are ideal in hot climates. Materials in roofing the chicken house are
grass, corrugated iron sheets galvanized and aluminum sheets. Paint the roof
with white paints to reflect heat if it is roofed with iron sheets

Section B (40 Marks)

Comprehension

Read the following passage and answer questions that follow

The outrage which Ezeulu`s son committed against the sacred python was a
very serious matter; Ezeulu was the first to admit it. But the ill will of the
neighbours and especially the impudent message sent him by the priest of
Idemili left him no alternative but to hurl defiance at them all. He was full of
amazement at the calumny which even people he called his friends were said to
be spreading against him.

“It is good for a misfortune like this to happen once in a while,” he said, “so that
we can know the thoughts of our friends and neighbours. Unless the wind blows
we do not see the fowl`s rump.”

He sent for his wife and asked her where her son was. She stood with her arms
folded across her breasts and said nothing. For the past two days she had been
full of resentment against her husband because it was he who sent Oduche to
the church people in spite of her opposition. Why should he now sharpen his
machete to kill him for doing what they taught him in church?

“Am I talking to a person or a carved nkwu?”

“I don’t know where he is.”

“You don’t know? He he he he he,” he laughed mechanically and then became

serious again. “You must be telling me in your mind that a man who brings ant-
infested faggots should not complain if he is visited by lizards. You are right.
But do not tell me you don’t know where your son is…….”

“Is he my son now?”

He ignored her question.

“Don’t tell me you don’t know where he is because it is a lie. You may call him
where you are hiding him. I have not killed anybody before and I will not start
with my son.”

“But he will not go to that church again.”

“That is a lie also. I have heard that he will be there and he will go. If anyone
does not like it he can come and jump on his back.”

That afternoon Oduche returned, looking like a fowl soaked in the rain. He
greeted his father fearfully but he ignored him completely. In the inner
compound the women welcomed him without enthusiasm. The little children
searched him closely as if to see whether he had altered in any way.

Although Ezeulu did not want anybody to think that he was troubled or to make
him appear like an object of pity, he did not ignore the religious implications of
Oduche`s act. He thought about it seriously on the night of the incident. The
custom of Umuaro was well known and he did not require the priest of Idemilli
to instruct him. Every Umuaro child knows that if a man kills the python
inadvertently he must placate Idemilli by arranging a funeral for the snake
almost as elaborate as a man`s funeral. But there was nothing in the customs of
Umuaro for the man who puts the python in a box. Ezeulu was not saying that it
was not an offence, but it was not serious enough for the priest to send him
insulting message. It was the kind of offence which a man put right between
himself and his personal god.
