List of Mini projects for MTC-203 Mechanical Behavior of Materials: All the following work

should take input and provide the output for the given input values not for a set of constant
values. The variables are given for each projects.

1. Make a GUI which will show the effect of strain hardening exponent, strength coefficient, on
the stress strain curve (Engg. stress – Engg. strain and True stress- True strain curves
separately). Input: YS, n, K, Uniform Elongation and Total elongation (Lakshya Saxena and
Nainesh Kothari)
Use the constitutive equation:

2. Make a GUI to show the effect of strain rate and strain rate sensitivity on the stress strain
curve. Input: YS, strain rate, SRS (Ishaan and Astha Pokhariya)
Use the constitutive equation:
𝜎 = 𝐶𝜖 𝑚
3. Draw the stress distribution surrounding an edge dislocation. Input: Shear modulus, Poisson’s
ratio, Burgers Vector

4. Draw the stress distribution surrounding a screw dislocation. Input: Shear modulus, and
Burgers Vector (Arnav Kirti (23118010) and Ayush Kumar Poddar (23118018))
5. Show the 3D distribution of elastic Modulus of a cubic crystal along different crystallographic
axes. Input: S11, S12 and S44 constants

Here  and  are the direction cosines of the [hkl] direction with the unit axes of the
cubic crystal [100], [010], and [001].

You are expected to provide a diagram like the following:

Ayush Singh - 23410010

6. A model to show the atomic movements during twin formation in fcc crystals.
7. Make a plot of crack growth rate vs stress intensity factor:
Divyansh Dewangan (23118030) and Pranshu Sharma (23118063)

Here, da/dN is the rate of crack growth, K is the stress intensity factor and C,m are material
constants. You may refer to the supplementary information of the following article to get
typical values of stress intensity factors and other material constants.

8. Write a Matlab or mathematic program to calculate the following from the force,
displacement, and initial sample dimensions: (i) calculate and plot the engg stress and engg
strain curve, (ii) calculate and plot the true stress-strue strain curve, (iii) calculate the strain
hardening exponent (from true stress-true strain) using the following equations and also show
the corresponding plots: (a) 𝜎 = 𝐾𝜖 𝑛 and (b) 𝜎 = 𝜎0 + 𝐾𝜖 𝑛 , here 𝜎0 is the yield stress, and
K and n are the strength coefficient and strain hardening exponent. You can take the data of
Mild steel.
9. Similar to project 8, from the force, displacement and sample dimension data, directly
calculate and plot the True stress and true strain curve. Calculate the strain hardening
exponent. On the true tress-true strain curve, superimpose the strain hardening curve (i.e.
𝑑𝜎
𝑣𝑠 𝜖 ). Show that the intersection point happens at the strain corresponding to UTS.
𝑑𝜖
10. For the given state of triaxial state of stress, plot the Mohrs circle in 3D. You need to write a
program which will do all the tasks. In this you have to calculate the principal stresses, and
draw a diagram as shown below, where Points A,B, C are the principal stresses in decreasing
order of value. The radius of the bigger circle is the maximum shear stress, considering all the
3 principal stress values, the radius of the small circle is the maximum shear stress calculated
from the 2nd and 3rd principal stresses. The radius of the intermediate circle is the maximum
shear stress calculated from the 1st and 2nd principal stresses.

11. Collect the data of grain size and yield strength for at least 2 different materials with varying
ranges of grain size from 100 nm or smaller to 100 micron or larger (at least 10 different grain
sizes in the given range should be collected from literature). Fit the Hall-Petch equation, vary
the root of grain size from square, cube and so on, and demonstrate that the fitting can be done
very well for all these conditions.
12. In Vickers hardness test, the angle between the opposite faces of the pyramid is 136 degrees.
This angle is chosen to have the geometric similitude (Refer the sections on Brinell hardenss
and Vickers Hardness in Mechanical Metallurgy by G.E. Dieter).
