SUB TOPIC: What is a food test? Types of food tests and their importance.

INTRODUCTION OF FOOD TESTING


What is Food Testing?
Food Testing is the process of analyzing food samples to determine their safety, quality, and
composition. It helps protect consumers from foodborne illness and ensures food products
meet regulatory standards. Laboratories conduct tests using advanced techniques to identify
potential hazards and contain contaminants.
IMPORTANCE OF FOOD TESTING
Food testing is important because:
 It helps determine the safety of food for use.
 It assures that food is free of physical, chemical, and biological hazards.

TYPES OF FOOD TESTING


 Iodine for starch test
 The filter paper test for lipids
 The Biuret test for protein
 Benedict solution for reducing sugar, e.t.c

BIURET TEST FOR PROTEIN


These are the apparatus and materials needed for Biuret Test:
Apparatus:
 Dry test tube
 Pipettes
 Test tube stand
 Distilled water

Materials:
 Sodium Hydroxide
 Copper Sulfate solution

Iodine test for starch

Materials Required
 Knife
 Spatula
 Porcelain tile.
 Iodine solution
 Food sample – Potato or any other vegetables or fruits.

Filter paper for testing fats


Materials Required
Filter paper.
Sunlight or any other source of light.
Food sample – Oil, Butter, Cheese, deep-fried potato chips etc.
