Topic 2: Gears
2.1 When only two gears are used, the drive gear and the driven gear rotate in opposite
directions?
True

2.2 An idler gear is used to change the direction of the driven gear so that it turns in the
same direction as the drive gear. The idler gear will change the mechanical
advantage of the gear set?
True

2.3 Three or more gears in mesh together are called a Gear Train

2.4 What is the purpose of a Woodruff Key?

It prevents gears from slipping on their shafts

Figure 2

2.5 What type of gear is Figure 2?

Helical Gear

2.6 What are the advantages of this type of gear (see Figure 2)?

Large tooth contact area, consequently more torque can be transmitted

Smoother transfer of power

2.7 What is the disadvantage of this type of gear (see Figure 2) compared to spur gears?
They produce sideways thrust that tends to push the gear along the shaft

Figure 3

2.8 What type of gear are Figure 3?

Bevel Gears

2.9 In what application are these gears used?

Where speed is slower and there is no high impact present

Figure 4

2.10 What type of gear setup is shown in Figure 4?

Worm Gear

2.11 Why are worm gears chiefly used?

To transmit rotation with a large reduction in speed

2.12 What is gear face width?

The width of the gear across the teeth

2.13 What is the purpose of the Involute Curve on gear teeth?

It provides a rolling contact as opposed to sliding against other teeth in mesh

2.14 If gears mesh is too tightly, what will occur?

Binding

Excessive friction

Power loss

Accelerated wea

2.15 In a gear set, if the driving gear has 16 teeth and the driven gear has 48 teeth,
what is the gear ratio?
3:1

2.16 Is the gear ratio indicating an overdrive or reduction?

Reduction

Figure 5

Topic 3: Planetry Gears

The components of a single Planetary Gear Set consists of:
A sun gear

A carrier, with planetary pinions mounted to it

An internally tooth gear called a ring gear or annulus

Relating to the number of teeth, which gear is the largest in a Planetary Gear Set?
Planetary Carrier

Which gear has the least number of teeth in a Planetary Gear Set?
Sun Gear

When an external to external gear tooth set is in mesh, will the gears rotate in the same
direction, or in an opposite direction?
Opposite direction

To get maximum forward reduction in a Planetary Gear Set, which members need to drive,
be driven and be held?
Driving member – Sun Gear

Driven member – Planetary Carrier

Held member – Ring Gear (Annulus)

To get minimum forward reduction in a Planetary Gear Set, which members need to drive,
be driven and be held?
Driving member – Ring Gear (Annulus)

Driven member – Planetary Carrier

Held member – Sun Gear

To get maximum forward overdrive in a Planetary Gear Set, which members need to drive,
be driven and be held?

In a Planetary Gear Set, if two members have an input of the same direction at the same
speed, what is the resultant output?
Direct Drive (1:1)

In a Planetary Gear Set, if the sun gear is driving, the planetary carrier is held and the ring
gear is driven, what is the result?

Topic 4: Power Trains

4.1 Power Trains will normally fit under three general classifications. These are:
Mechanical Drive

Hydrostatic Drive

Electric Drive

4.2 In a power train, what does the engine provide?

The power to operate the vehicle and the coupling device

4.3 What is the purpose of the differential?

Transmits power to the final drive and wheels while allowing each wheel to rotate at
different speeds

4.4 What is the major benefit of gear drives?

No slippage and the ability to handle very high loads

4.5 In wheeled machines, the bevel and pinion set in a differential are normally matched
sets.
True

4.6 In a chain drive, what are the gears normally called?

Sprockets

4.7 Like gears, chain drives virtually eliminate Slippage

4.8 What type of chains are normally seen on heavy vehicles?

Roller

4.9 What is used to ensure that chain tension is maintained?

Tensioner

4.10 The disadvantages of a chain drive are:

Chain sprockets and shafts must be carefully aligned to ensure full service life and
correct tracking

Chain drives must be lubricated regularly to reduce wear, protect against corrosion and
prevent the link pins or roller bushings from galling or seizing

4.11 How do you determine the mechanical advantage of a two friction wheel set if the
driver has a diameter of 16 cm and the driven has a diameter of 32 cm?
Circumference must be determined - 2r (using 3.146 as ) = 50.336cm (16cm dia wheel)
and 100.672cm (32 cm dia wheel) = 2:1. Using the diameter or radius of the wheels will also
obtain the same result providing the driven over driver formula is used.

4.12 Unlike wheels driven by direct friction contact, pulleys rotate in the same
direction. What is the ideal contact area for belts?
0
180

4.13 Give a brief explanation of a hydrostatic drive

1. Engine to Hydrostatic Pump

2. Pump provides oild flow to a drive motor

3. Drive motor transfers power to the transmission or directly to the final drive.

4.14 Give a brief explanation of an electric drive

1. Engine drives an AC alternator

2. AC power converted to DC power by rectifiers

3. Electric energy is used to power the wheel motors.
