Enrol for Group Assignments in the menu to create your group first!

In this group assignment you will create your own frozen vortex wake model of a
wind turbine or a propeller (OPTIONAL: you can do both), as in the case of the
BEM assignment. You can find step by step instructions in the references: Katz
and Plotkin [1], and the online tutorial [2].

Part 1: Evaluation of a single rotor

• You will use the same geometry as for the rotor of the BEM assignment
(Part 2), and analyse it at the same operating conditions as listed in the BEM
assignment. Determine Cl and Cd at the 1/4 chord location, as described in
[2] and in the lecture videos/PowerPoint.
• Elective: determine circulation by applying the impermeability boundary
condition as in [1] (see also lecture notes/videos).

Part 2 (OPTIONAL): Evaluate the operation of two-rotors side-by-side

• Consider two rotors, in the same plane perpendicular to𝑈∞, at a distance L

of each other (distance between the two rotor axis). Evaluate the
performance of the rotors for different values of𝐿=[∞,5𝐷,2𝐷,𝐷] , for the
same operating conditions as considered in the BEM assignment.
• Consider the effect of effect of the rotation phase difference between
rotors. Evaluate the effect of distance, stream tube independence and tip
effects.

For this assignment you need to submit the following:

• A report, 20 pages maximum containing:

o SHORT introduction
o A flowchart of your code
o Main assumptions with an explanation of their impact
o Plot the results of the simulation, including a discussion of the results:
▪ radial distribution of the angle of attack
▪ radial distribution of the inflow angle
▪ radial distribution of the circulation
▪ radial distribution of the tangential/azimuthal load
▪ radial distribution of the axial load
▪ total thrust coefficient (CT) and power coefficient (CP)
▪ plot all results non-dimensioned (explain the non-dimensioning)

1. Plot the results for both the single and (OPTIONAL) two-rotor cases. For the
two-rotor cases, only the ones you find relevant for your discussion
2. Plots comparing the results to the results obtained in BEM
3. Plots with explanation of sensitivity of results to choice of:
• assumed convection speed for frozen wake
• discretization of the blade (constant, cosine)
• azimuthal discretization (number of wake segments per rotation)
• length of the wake (number of rotations), including convergence of
the solution with wake length
4. (OPTIONAL) Discuss the validity of your wake geometry assumption for the
two-rotor configuration
5. Include a SHORT discussion/conclusion, comparing BEM and the lifting line
approach, including assumptions

Code in .zip or .rar file. Make sure the code is ready to run, so include all relevant
files.
