Phone Assignment part 1 – Dimension Lines

In this tutorial I will show you the basics of adding dimension lines to a figure. I also want to
show you how to add rounded corners to an object.

Now you have been asked to create a scale diagram of your cell phone. Something simple to
make a figure of that everyone has. Start by measuring the outside dimensions of your phone.
My phone is 7cm (70mm) wide by 15cm (150mm) tall.

So I will start by making a rectangle with a starting point at 0,0 and an end point at 70,150 (we
want out scale to be in mm)

After that you can use zoom extents to make sure you can see the whole thing
Now we have a rectangular outline, great. The thing is most cell phones are not rectangular
(some are depending on the brand) instead they have rounded edges. So I want you to measure
on your cell phone how many mm in from the outside the edge starts to curve. This will give
you the radius of the corner.

Now select the fillet command from the modify group

Once you select the command before you click anything press the down arrow and select radius

Enter the radius of the curve you measured (the larger the radius the greater the curve at the
corner)
Select the two sides of the object

And this will give you a rounded corner

Remember a larger radius will round the corner in a more extreme way (this is an example of
radius set to 50)
Now lets add some outside dimension lines to our figure. AutoCAD is awesome in that it will do
dimension lines automatically for you. The trick is that you need to tweak the settings for
aesthetics (so it looks nice)

So start off going under annotation. Click the drop down and select dimension style

Click manage dimension styles

Then click modify

The first thing we want to change is under the lines tab. We want to change extend beyond
dim lines This is how far the extension lines will go past the arrow, how far you choose is just a
matter of what will look nice on your diagram, I picked 10 mm.

The next to modify is offset from origin, this is much more important, this is how far your
extension lines will be spaced from what they are measuring. If you choose a value that is too
low your extension and dimension lines will blend into the figure. Again depending on your
scale and figure this will vary you just want to pick something that looks nice. For this figure I
chose a value of 15
Next go to the symbols and arrows tab. You will want to punch up your arrow size so it is not
microscopic on the page. Again this will vary depending on the figure and scale. I chose a value
of 12.

Now go to the text tab and modify your text height. Again this will vary depending on the figure
and scale. I chose a value of 8.
Now the most important part. Go to the primary units tab. First we will change precision, this
controls how many decimal places are shown. Since we are using a scale in mm we do not want
any decimal places.

Now go to suffix, this will be the label that follows the measurement, Since we are doing a scale
in millimeters put mm as your suffix.

Your dimension line settings are good now so click ok and close out the box.
Now lets add our outside dimension lines.

To add dimension lines just select the dimension command

Click on the two points you want dimension lines between. (In this case we have rounded off
the corners so make sure to click on points outside of where you set the fillet).
And drag the dimension line to a place that looks good for the figure
