Friends of The Nodes: ND TH TH TH TH TH
in When computing the natural and the temporary relationships of the grahas, many people tend to ignore the nodes. In my own case, though I have been studying Jyotish for a few years now, I have rarely contemplated this. But since I am running the maha dasa of Ketu, the ruler of secrecy, I was tempted to look into this topic. As a person steeped in Parasarian tradition, I decided to consider what this great sage had to say. In the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, he mentions (BPHS 3:55 onwards) that the lord of the exaltation rasi of a graha and the lords of the 2 , 4 , 5 , 8 , 9 and 12 from the moolatrikona of a graha are its friends. In the case of Rahu and Ketu, Parasara mentions (BPHS 47:34 onwards) that the moolatrikona for them are Mithuna and Dhanur respectively. If one takes both these statements together, it emerges that the natural friends of Rahu are Budha, Sukra, Sani and Chandra, while the natural friends of Ketu are Kuja, Guru, Sani, Chandra and Surya. Some of these friendships seem logical. Rahu likes Budha because Rahu like Budha is intelligent (BPHS 3:30), Sukra because he is his teacher besides being his exaltation lord, and Sani because he is the co-owner of Kumbha. Similarly, Ketu likes Kuja because he is the co-owner of Vrichaka and also because Kuja is his exaltation lord, Guru because they share Dhanur as their moolatrikona, and Sani because for Moksha, you first need Vairagya. But one turns two shades whiter than a snakes belly when the word friend is used in the context of the nodes and the luminaries. How can Surya and Chandra, bitter enemies of the nodes, be considered their friends? To understand this, we have to appreciate that Parasara is not just a great astrologer. He is also the third greatest devotee of Lord Vishnu as per Sri Adi Sankaracharya's Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Karavalamba Stotra and we can be sure that if Parasara said something, it has to be true. Let me put forward my logic. Rahu may be friendly with Chandra because both share the same exaltation rasi, Vrishaba, which is ruled by Sukra, a graha of luxury. Also, both Rahu and Chandra, their eclipse enmities apart, are hedonistic and lustful by nature, so they probably have a common ground. Ketu's fondness for Chandra may have a different reason. Ketu is the Moksha karaka and for Moksha you need to condition the mind, which is ruled by Chandra. Ketu also likes Surya, whom Rahu doesn't, because Moksha is ultimately something that the soul, ruled by Surya, attains. Of course, all this is merely my logic. The intellectual ability of people in the Kali Yuga is feeble (BPHS 66:7 onwards), so far be it from me to rationalise the great sage's thoughts. However, I have logician Budha as lagna lord in the divine 9th, so I pray that what I have said here is true. ***
