Ans: The address of Joe Morgan’s house was Number 12 Blaina
Terrace.

1. What was the address of Joe Morgan’s house?

Ans: The story’s main character is Dr. Andrew Manson, a young
medical professional.

3. Who was the old woman?

Ans: The old lady was Susan Morgan’s mother.

4. What is asphyxia pallida?

Ans: Asphyxia pallida is a serious disorder caused by a lack of
Oxygen and a high concentration of Carbon dioxide in the blood. It
causes a lack of breathing and pale, whitish-colored skin. Asphyxia
pallida is a major reason for the death of newborn babies and is
generally caused due to complications during childbirth.

5 Who was Joe Morgan ? Why had he been waiting for Dr

Andrew Manson ?
Ans : Joe Morgan was a driller in Blaenelly, a mining town. He was a
big, strong and heavy middle-aged person. Joe and his wife Susan,
who had been married nearly twenty years, were expecting their first
child. Joe was waiting for the doctor to help Susan in the delivery of
the child.

6 ‘Don’t fret, mother, I’ll not run away.’ Why do you think
Andrew say so ?
Ans: Mrs Morgan’s mother offered to make a cup of tea for the
doctor. The experienced woman had realized that there must be a
period of waiting. She was afraid that the doctor would leave the
case saying that he would return later.
7.How did he revive the mother ?
Ans Susan Morgan lay collapsed and almost pulse-less. Andrew
smashed a glass ampule, instantly and injected the medicine. Then
he threw the hypodermic syringe. Medicine worked to revive the
almost lifeless woman. After a few minutes of intense effort, her
heart strengthened and she was safe.

8. What did Andrew think was wrong with the child ? What did
he do?
Ans : Andrew saw the child was a perfectly formed boy. The head
tilted on a thin neck and the limbs seemed boneless. He looked
extremely pale and white. He knew that the whiteness meant
asphyxia pallida. He thought of the treatment, he remembered being
used at the Samaritan. He applied the same to the stillborn child.

9.Write a brief note about Susan’s mother.

Ans :Susan’s mother was an older woman, nearly seventy years old.
She is tall and grey-haired. The author described her as a wise and
experienced woman. She offered Andrew tea that he couldn’t leave.
She was also closely observing him. She had a great expectation of
a grandchild from her daughter.

10. Why did a shiver of horror pass through Andrew?

Ans Andrew was called by Joe Morgan to assist his pregnant wife,
Susan, who was giving birth after twenty years of marriage. Both
Susan and her mother had a great longing for the child. Andrew
promised Susan’s mother he wouldn’t run away from the patient.
When Susan gave birth to the child, it looked lifeless, and she was
in devastating condition. That made a shiver of horror pass through
Andrew as he couldn’t decide whom to assist first.

11. What was Andrew’s thought regarding marriage?

Ans: Andrew had a very optimistic view regarding marriage. Though
he remembered the failed marriages of a few people he knew, he
still believed marriage to be a peaceful event. However, the thought
of Christine soon confused his brain. He knew his doubtful mind had
put him in this confusion, but he couldn’t find a way out.
12 What dilemma was Andrew caught in ? How did he resolve it
?
Ans : After an hour-long struggle, the child was born lifeless and the
mother was in a critical state. Andrew was torn between his desire
to save the child, and his obligation(duty)towards the mother. He
overcome the dilemma, instinctively(without thinking more)he gave
the child to the nurse and turned his attention to Susan Morgan.

13. What efforts did Andrew make to revive the newborn baby ?
Ans : First, he laid the child upon a blanket and gave it artificial
respiration. Then he dipped the child alternately in hot and cold
water. After that he rubbed the slippery child with a rough towel. He
pressed and released his chest till it began to breath.

14. There is a great difference between textbook medicine and

the world of a practising physician. Discuss.
Ans: A doctor is one of the noblest professions in the world. The
great duty of saving a life is not done easily. Continuous experience
is needed to reach that level. Textbook knowledge is only a part of
the journey. It teaches physicians about different diseases, their
causes, and medicines. But the real application of the knowledge
occurs when dealing with patients. And in real encounters with
patients, physicians require much more than bookish knowledge.
Courage, observance, strong nerves, the capability to take risks,
and physical and mental energy play a major role in the right
treatment, especially in a serious condition.
Herein lies the actual test for doctors. Thus, the process of being a
good doctor takes loads of experience. The motivation to save lives
and sympathy for patients are key factors in being a great physician,
and these virtues are not taught in textbooks. One can acknowledge
these needs through their own professional experiences.

15. Suppose that you are the nurse in the story. Describe your
views about the particular case you attended at Morgans.
Answer:
I live in the neighbourhood of Morgans. I knew that Joe Morgan’s
wife Susan Morgan was expecting a baby. They were overjoyed as
they were going to have the baby after a long and tiresome wait of
20 years of their married life. They had already booked me. Joe
came to fetch me the evening his wife was in labour pains. I went
there and kept noting the progress of the case.

After an hour or so, Joe also brought along Dr. Andrew who had just
started his private medical practice. So honestly, I didn’t trust him
much. But anyhow, I just had to help him now. At about 3.30 a.m,
the baby took birth (but it was stillborn) Susan was still anesthetic so
not in a position to react. Joe was out in the street. But Susan’s
mother knew all this. I myself was shocked and stunned. How
brutally luck had dealt with poor Morgans. But had to abide by God’s
wish. I placed the baby under the bed, as is done in such case.

Dr. Andrew after giving required treatment to Susan asked for the
baby. He just fishing through the papers, took out the baby and
asked me to bring cold and hot water both and basins and towels
and all that. He had already slashed the cord which fell like a broken
stem. I tried to object but he never listened to me. I just saw him with
consternation.

He gave the child hot and cold bath alternatively. He gave the child
artificial respiration. He rubbed the child with rough towel. He
pressed and released the child’s tiny chest in his hands to bring in
there some breaths. Really, it was all just incredible. I again
implored him.

But he won’t listen to him and as if God in heaven had guided his
hands and minds. As he was trying to bring breath while clasping
and releasing, the child’s tiny chest heaved! It was a miracle I never
had seen. Next day only he told me the case history. I saluted Dr.
Andrew, his knowledge and commitment to work. Thank God; he
didn’t give way to my disbelief.
