Albert Camus Stranger
Albert Camus Stranger
By Andika Prtm
Abstract
The Stranger by Albert Camus has been familiarized among the classic novel readers that attracted
with some touch of understanding existentialism, absurdism, even nihilism that is wrapped up in one
excellent work. Concerning the monologue by a main character named Meursault who considered to
be had mental illness during his life but he did not think so. He did not value every single thing as
naturally people and radically apathetical person. Camus was born in Mondovi, Aljazeera in
November 7, 1913. During world-war two, he was one of resisting movement in Paris and many of
those mainly works is four well-known was praised, The Stranger, The Fall, The Plague, and
collection of short story Exile and The Kingdom. He was blessed by Literary Nobel prize in 1957.
Lastly, He pass away by accident car in 1960. Proportionately, the amount of book page was not
many, but concrete make it is really worth for readers who do not interested with tight pages.
Introduction
The story was begun with tragedy that his himself mother was died in shelter accommodation and he
got that news from anonymous telegram. Then it is unbelievable what kind of unexpected reason that
appeared on his face when he asked for boss permission to take two days off just said this is not my
mistake. This was the first impression showed to the reader was the nature of nothingness either he
has no feeling about sadness or he suffered mental illness. He did not felt bothered because panic
attack or shock when hearing it, but fascinatingly he imagine how exhausted and stressed him to
riding transportation to the village that far apart from his apartment ( in the story was told that
distances shelter was measured eighty kilometer and the only way to get there only by bus). After he
arrived, he then encountered with Shelter Head who are welcoming him and let them entered to the
building, However, when he was offered to see his mother cold face, he rejected it as just for
“nothing” reason, it evident with this following dialogue.
“We put the lid on, but I was told to unscrew it when you came, so that you could see her.” While he was going
up to the coffin I told him not to trouble. “Eh? What’s that?” he exclaimed. “You don’t want me to ...?” “No,” I
said. He put back the screwdriver in his pocket and stared at me. I realized then that I shouldn’t have said, “No,”
and it made me rather embarrassed. After eying me for some moments he asked: “Why not?” But he didn’t
sound reproachful; he simply wanted to know. “Well, really I couldn’t say,” I answered. He began twiddling his
white mustache; then, without looking at me, said gently: “I understand.”
It is still continued even after she was buried within funeral, that is, he did not seem express the
sadness or at least has any last words that conveyed or lamenting. For him, it is such as wind was
blowing around to represent meaninglessness. What he did after came back to his living was also as if
the yesterday was disappeared from his past. Ironically, he met with ex-worker friend who once get
attracted with in the pool. After some chatting, he asked again to went for watching a movies that she
wanted to watched. Again, the emphasizing of the nature of ironical sense perfectly was pictured
again to looking the fact that the genre of movies they watched was a comedy adding by inappropriate
manner in which intimate her when the film was going on. The peak moment of first part was when
he was committed homicide on the beach when visited Raymond friends. Firstly, Raymond more
likely the only ones who understanding what Meursault feels and considered him as a best friend. One
day, he confront and ended with fight with Arabic guy when met in streetcar. After that, he asked for
suggestion to Meursault and in this moment, unintentionally, everything became complicated. At the
beginning, they occasionally met with those Arabic guys was consists three person, did not intend to
fight seriously, they just threat them to retreat and it is succeed. What was unpredictable movement
that changing over the stream of the story is Meursault randomly act to strolling around the beach
enjoying the scene, but at the behind of rocks covered by sun shone brightly, he shocked when faced
one of those guys. After pointing one another, the guys just only has knife but Meursault has gun.
Absolutely clear who was lucky, but by accident again, the trigger revolver was unluckily pulled
caused the affection of brightness of the sun as if burned body and the way he holds a gun
aggressively intense. Briefly after that incident, he was questioned many times while waiting for
investigation which followed by the trials. during his waiting to sentence, there was moment a number
person that he knows help his charges in court by said he committed with a set of proper coincidence
plans.
“To my mind it was just an accident, or a stroke of bad luck, if you prefer. And a thing like that takes you off
your guard.”
“To which the Prosecutor retorted that in this case “chance” or “mere coincidence” seemed to play a remarkably
large part. Was it by chance that I hadn’t intervened when Raymond assaulted his mistress? Did this convenient
term “chance” account for my having vouched for Raymond at the police station and having made, on that
occasion, statements extravagantly favorable to him? In conclusion he asked Raymond to state what were his
means of livelihood”
Often times the Jury also connect the main incident with his current action during and after since his
mother passed away and Meursault get annoyed with it. How come something totally different they
are try to forcibly associated with his nature and to him was irrational decision. Emphesising the
words coincidence was frankly seems odd on they point of view so that they are eventually did not
relieve his charge. Upon day to day, Meursault were killing his time staring the jail ceiling while
waiting next court uncertainly. The execution day was coming and he giggling over his body when
just one day before, the Pastor try to calm him and suggest me to believe and resigned himself to God
to praying. Hearing that, he feels frustrated and quickly condemned the Pastor by such a cursed word.
After that, story about to end by monologue described his reluctancy why did he act like abnormal
and relieved that his bothered things was over.
Analysis
Overall, this storytelling was divided into two parts, first one was telling about the set of events
started from his mother died and led gradually to the peak tragedy when he shot Arabian guys
preserve as Raymond enemy who was spying him until on beach. And the second one simply was
telling about consequences post-accident that he was justified and eventually he sentenced by dead.
This paper only took focus of how the aspect of characterization taken role important place of
development story and its affect dealing with another figure was encountered with Meursault. The
most crucial one that should be clear here is the nature of absurdism, as have been reconfirmed in
earlier part even before the story about to began. This part will serve us the picture of how we look at
the main character and later reader will be introduced by his natural deeds, complication, crisis
identity and the way he saw the world was absolutely, nothingness. In introduction part, it is
mentioned that to Camus, the personality of his main character was neither good or bad, nor has a
moral or not, which is why he categorized as an absurdity kind of view. The point is, these different
words contain two distinct meaning. An ‘absurd’ is the ones who undoubtedly took inevitable
conclusion from nature of absurdity. Absurdity manifests the parts between human aspiration to unity
and physical and spiritual dualism that could not be separated, the fragments between human
encourage to eternality and restriction of its existence, between charity of life goals and worthless
hardworking. Opportunity, death, was differentiation that was vagueness and all of those is extreme
point from the called ‘absurdity’. After the reader knows what the meaning of absurdity, there also
one term that manifested it which called reluctancy, an unwillingness to do something that naturally
supposed to be rational and normally logic, Thinking about everything was come up terribly bothering
him and keep something as it is. reader also received the meaning of Nihilism that it is so far apart
from this case, but simply defined, is the extreme level of absurdness and in the position where the
world was no goals to accomplish and contrast from the existentialism concept that assert the creature
and human being was valued-life.
The paper not intend to breakdown each of those term one by one, but only focused on particular
aspects in details that must be concerned which is the adaptation of absurdity enlarge to overall and
affect how the story. Every argument or interpretation of hidden meaning or symbol that could be
found also served by textual evident. Additionally, another aspect that did not related with these
concept also took small things into consideration to be analysed in which the hidden symbols is not
always relate with primary themes of the text, but could be other thing as hidden writer intention. At
the first part, it can be seen the melancholic situation as comparison between Meursault mother passed
away and the picturing narration about the nature and the sun shone heat him symbolize his
disappointment and unwanted to mourning his himself mother. During the way to the funeral, he
seems frequently complained about the weather and preferably to stay at his apartment.
“I had an impression that our little procession was moving slightly faster. Wherever I looked I saw the same
sun-drenched countryside, and the sky was so dazzling that I dared not raise my eyes. Presently we struck a
patch of freshly tarred road. A shimmer of heat played over it and one’s feet squelched at each step, leaving
bright black gashes. In front, the coachman’s glossy black hat looked like a lump of the same sticky substance,
poised above the hearse. It gave one a queer, dreamlike impression, that blue-white glare overhead and all this
blackness round one: the sleek black of the hearse, the dull black of the men’s clothes, and the silvery-black
gashes in the road. And then there were the smells, smells of hot leather and horse dung from the hearse, veined
with whiffs of incense smoke. What with these and the hangover from a poor night’s sleep, I found my eyes and
thoughts growing blurred.”
In second part, this is the most ridiculous action that wrapped up properly impress the reader with
sensation of surprising and unbelievable. Ironical moment when he went to the pool and met the old
friend inviting him to go for a comedy movies definitely depicted what on his looks accepted the fact
that after mourned he acts as if nothing happened. The setting of place where apartment were located
perfectly potrayed point of view of city light from his balcony. That is to say, that the combination
between aftermath and before most likely make no differences that imply something meaninglessness.
The sky had changed again; a reddish glow was spreading up beyond the housetops. As dusk set in, the street
grew more crowded. People were returning from their walks, and I noticed the dapper little man with the fat
wife amongst the passersby. Children were whimpering and trailing wearily after their parents. After some
minutes the local picture houses disgorged their audiences. I noticed that the young fellows coming from them
were taking longer strides and gesturing more vigorously than at ordinary times; doubtless the picture they’d
been seeing was of the wild-West variety. Those who had been to the picture houses in the middle of the town
came a little later, and looked more sedate, though a few were still laughing. On the whole, however, they
seemed languid and exhausted. Some of them remained loitering in the street under my window. A group of girls
came by, walking arm in arm. The young men under my window swerved so as to brush against them, and
shouted humorous remarks, which made the girls turn their heads and giggle. I recognized them as girls from
my part of the town, and two or three of them, whom I knew, looked up and waved to me.
The next part, also showed that the figure of strangeness belonging to main characters when someone
he knew well, Raymond treated him as his close friends and asked if it is allowed. Meursault agree
with his demand but without any expression or intonation that showing happiness or proudness.
Raymond also mentioned that only himself who understanding in terms of the way Meursault treat
someone and his deeds when it comes to communicate with society. It is hard to explain what he tried
to assume about innate relationship between them besides the fact Meursault has helped his
consultation and gave one or two pieces of advices. For him, as long as he fulfil his sakes without any
that have anything to do as if always exhausted and reluctant to communicating for long duration of
time.
He explained that it was about this he wanted my advice. The lamp was smoking, and he stopped pacing up and
down the room, to lower the wick. I just listened, without speaking. I’d had a whole bottle of wine to myself and
my head was buzzing. As I’d used up my cigarettes I was smoking Raymond’s. Some late streetcars passed, and
the last noises of the street died off with them. Raymond went on talking. What bored him was that he had “a
sort of lech on her” as he called it. But he was quite determined to teach her a lesson.
After that part, the fourth part contain simply but concrete narration and complexity of setting place
behind it. Beginning with disrespectful bad manner Raymond confront against the police, he smoking
in front of them whom were asking question about the violence towards Arabic woman that caused
hard noise throughout apartment. But, the most interesting part when one old man named Salamano
always condemn his dog with “The bastard! The filthy cur!” ( it sometimes appeared in the noise
nearby Meursault apartment and it added unique impression) came to asked Meursault about his dog
had went away. Logically, he must be happy, but he did not, he is worrying about his pet and at the
same time still grunted indicating that he still cares it. It is called ambiguity. There was unexplained
reason or any statement underlying it causing confusion since his treatment towards it can be said was
cruel.
“Excuse me ... I hope I’m not disturbing you.” I asked him in, but he shook his head. He was staring at his toe
caps, and the gnarled old hands were trembling. Without meeting my eyes, he started talking. “They won’t really
take him from me, will they, Monsieur Meursault? Surely they wouldn’t do a thing like that. If they do—I don’t
know what will become of me.” I told him that, so far as I knew, they kept stray dogs in the pound for three
days, waiting for their owners to call for them. After that they disposed of the dogs as they thought fit. He stared
at me in silence for a moment, then said, “Good evening.” After that I heard him pacing up and down his room
for quite a while. Then his bed creaked. Through the wall there came to me a little wheezing sound, and I
guessed that he was weeping. For some reason, I don’t know what, I began thinking of Mother. But I had to get
up early next day; so, as I wasn’t feeling hungry, I did without supper, and went straight to bed.
In fifth part, there is one dialogue that should be concern in, Marie and Meursault.
“Then she asked me again if I loved her. I replied, much as before, that her question meant nothing or next to
nothing—but I supposed I didn’t. “If that’s how you feel,” she said, “why marry me?” I explained that it had no
importance really, but, if it would give her pleasure, we could get married right away. I pointed out that, anyhow,
the suggestion came from her; as for me, I’d merely said, “Yes.” Then she remarked that marriage was a serious
matter. To which I answered: “No.” She kept silent after that, staring at me in a curious way. Then she asked:
“Suppose another girl had asked you to marry her—I mean, a girl you liked in the same way as you like me—
would you have said ‘Yes’ to her, too?” “Naturally.” Then she said she wondered if she really loved me or not. I,
of course, couldn’t enlighten her as to that. And, after another silence, she murmured something about my being
“a queer fellow.” “And I daresay that’s why I love you,” she added. “But maybe that’s why one day I’ll come to
hate you.”
From this dialogue, he defined the expression of love merely trivial stuff, but even did not reach until
that measure, or even only nothingness. Supposing every aspect of human needs has no value in it and
let it passed quickly. He treated Marie as not special as she thought. He treat her in the same way if he
met another woman too and both makes no differences. As his friendship with Raymond who also the
same, he didn’t express any specifically emotion that attract her as her expectation. Frankly, she
deemed him as the weird person and did not seem angry or disappointed with such replies.
Thus, entered to final part in first chapter in which everything was begun and along with finish. Once
moment on the beach when confront against Raymond enemy which is Arabic group, actually it was
enough when they decided to drawbacks after saw Raymond holds a revolver in his hand, thinking
that is impossible to winning fight knife resists gun. However, something strange took his mind and
spiritual control when he unreasonably approached one of them and pointing weapon each other was
occurred. Initially, he did not deliberately want to encounter them again, but it is by coincidence, his
body lay down over the sand and his position blocked with rock bumps. After glaring each other, he
accidently shot him because overly strong grip and he blamed sunshine since rise tension of his body.
The enemy was died, and the most ridiculously shot him until four times. So then, he got arrested and
placed in jail for temporary times during trial session. These all set of accident was inferred that life to
him, has no values as if normal things he usually do, but everything that conducted, there must be
took into consequences by the name of law and morality in which were about to explained later,
After some question and interrogation, it is concluded that there is delay time between the first shot
and second. What he answered from that question, he did not know why and it is absurd. How come
the dead body was shot many times for nothing reason. During these parts dealing with the police, the
Judge, Lawyer, Jury, and Prosecutor, he did not hope for something that reduce his charges and at
least get a few years in jail. Regardless, he sicked for all these annoyed things why its process getting
slower. In the next part, once Marie visited him, there was no emotional stream that caught in his face
but staring her without desire. Even could be said that he actually did not cares with his own condition
now and waiting for sentenced. Even so, his lawyer and his friends did not give up for heavy
accusation. The reason “by coincidence” evokes the Judge linking with whole of events pre-accident
caused him in heavy charges, especially, when the Judge wonder about his psyche condition regards
with his treatment to his mother before and during mourning.
The way he preferred to chose his reluctancy and ignore the challenge that threaten his life was
absolutely could not be explained and the time was going closer to the sentenced, he had given
motivation by the Priest, but instead he reflects his condition, he roared and condemned him about all
those things about what he has been felt since during his life, reluctancy, what people thinking about
him, absurdity, meaninglessness, his opinion what death and life was, what is importance the
existence of the God and mother, And then story returned to the monologue waiting his execution.
From this part, the crucial point to highlighted was the way he looked the existence of life was equally
meaningless and his consistency to endure that suffering condition by overlooking even spiritual
aspects like feelings, sense of belonging, and concerns literally symbolize how dangerous the
absurdity is when opposed with the morality as controlled emotions and deeds.
Conclusion
To clearly understand, it was defined that Meursault as a fully conscious character who only has no
reflective feelings upon various fake and hypocritical rules and customs of a society that in the
moment of defiance, though lawfully, pushes anyone to the edge as a stranger, and he is figuratively
exiled because of not playing the game of the others. His ideology to resistance the nature of society
and morality caused him could not differentiate the valued and unvalued one. Thinking pattern of
absurdity itself reflects his way to running his meaningless life and so that led to nothingness.

Indefensible Indifference. Journal of Basic and Applied Scientific Research, 2(4), 4223-4226.
Almost all of the classic novel readers known well who Fyodor Dostoevsky is. a Russian
most popular writer that was affiliated with liberalist movement that make him was arrested in 1849.
Hw was born in 1821 and had once sentenced by death, but at the last moment got forgiveness. He.
then, was in jail and exiled in Cyberia. All of his experience turning his political view and morality
from originally liberal to orthodox Christianity. After exile, he wrote a number of best works and later
they will be popularized upon the times. Many of his works such Notes from Underground, Crime and
Punishment, The Gambler, The Idiot, The Demons, and The Dream of Ridiculous Man, and others.
The story that will be breakdown here is telling about an employee who served as a main
characters named Golyadkin, who supposedly has mental illness. But other also argue that he has
double personality in which in the early to the middle story, he was introduced by his double as the
similar appearance and personality. This paper do not completely find out the strange moment and the
unique things that appeared in the story, rather focusing in a few point especially the moment he has
to deal with his unconscious mind that was under control and caused him struggle to speak to the
point.
The first moment he confronted with his childhood friend, Krestyan Ivanovich, in order to
consult about his mental healthy and questioned about the solution to overcome his anxiety. Krestyan
is general doctor and surgery expert in his carrier. It seems that the doctor tried to be patient with him
to understanding his complexity word and more likely excessive to use a kind of imagery word.
Before that, once the doctor welcoming him, he did something awkward moment (after entering living
room he quickly sat in the chair without permission, he stood again once he realized and then after gor
permission, he sat again) that frustrated him as the sign of politeness. during his meeting with him, he
spent long time uttering his problem, yet the doctor seems cannot waiting and sometimes his attention
changes to another direction. Throughout his body was trembling at the peak tension cause the doctor
finished his complaint.
“Oh, well . . . as you like . . . h’m . . .” (A moment of silence followed.) “For my part, you know . . .
whatever I can do . . . and I sincerely wish you well.” “I understand you, Krestyan Ivanovitch, I understand: I
understand you perfectly now . . . In any case excuse me for having troubled you, Krestyan Ivanovitch.” “H’m,
no, I didn’t mean that. However, as you please; go on taking the medicines as before . . . .” “I will go with the
medicines as you say, Krestyan Ivanovitch. I will go on with them, and I will get them at the same chemist’s . . .
To be a chemist nowadays, Krestyan Ivanovitch, is an important business . . . .” “How so? In what sense do you
mean?” “In a very ordinary sense, Krestyan Ivanovitch. I mean to say that nowadays that’s the way of the world.
. .”
Apparently what he was scared to was his enemy who he himself not clearly described.
Rather than medicine effect was given, he insists his matter absolutely different cases. His matter
regards with his company and gossip was spreading.
In many occasion, there were a moment that reflect him as indecisive person. According to
Deacon Joseph Ferrari, Ph.D. (2021), he defined Indecision is a type of chronic procrastination, and it
happens when someone has to make an important, often stressful decision, but they feel overwhelmed
by the number of choices and end up searching for information and claim they never got around to
making the final decision. These individuals are not lazy; they just do everything to avoid making a
tough decision. An example of this situation is when one is choosing a suitable job or a mate. It was
evident by this monologue,
Now he was on the point of pushing forward and slipping in; the refreshment-room was empty and no
one was in sight. Mr. Golyadkin saw all this through the little window; in two steps he was at the door and had
already opened it. “Should he go in or not? Come, should he or not? I’ll go in . . . why not? to the bold all ways
lie open!” Reassuring himself in this way, our hero suddenly and quite unexpectedly retreated behind the screen.
“No,” he thought. “Ah, now, somebody’s coming in? Yes, they’ve come in; why did I dawdle when there were
no people about? Even so, shall I go and slip in? . . . No, how slip in when a man has such a temperament! Fie,
what a low tendency! I’m as scared as a hen! Being scared is our special line, that’s the fact of the matter! To be
abject on every occasion is our line: no need to ask us about that. Just stand here like a post and that’s all! At
home I should be having a cup of tea now . . . It would be pleasant, too, to have a cup of tea.
On the one side, he trying to thinking carefully dealing with the effect he got, yet the
unconscious mind whatever it is coming from take over his emotional and movement body to go
forward irrationally and eventually once he realised what he did, he regrets his decision and pullback
his existence. In that condition, he even really confused why the reason he was acting like that and
why should not do this. And it was getting peak when his double finally appeared and as if his
existence was ready to destruct his life. He thought that nice person has no double and particularly if
any, he is going to be a rival. His big fearfulness become reality when he met his double appeared in
the office he works in. Initially, Tn.Golyadkin try to calmed himself and act as if he did not really
comes to compete his life. He even ensure by asking his company about the reason His Excellency
chose his double and about the gossip surrounding him, but frankly it is not.
No. I . . . that is, Anton Antonovitch, I want to ask you, didn’t his Excellency say anything
more . . .about me, for instance?” “Well! To be sure! No, nothing of the sort; you can set your mind quite at rest.
You know it is, of course, a rather striking circumstance, and at first . . .why, here, I, for instance, I scarcely
noticed it. I really don’t know why I didn’t notice it till you mentioned it. But you can set your mind at rest
entirely. He said nothing particular, absolutely nothing,” added good-natured Anton Antonovitch, getting up
from his chair. “So then, Anton, Antonovitch, I . . .” “Oh, you must excuse me. Here I’ve been gossiping about
these trivial matters, and I’ve business that is important and urgent. I must inquire about it.
Firstly, indeed his double treat nice to him, but overtime, since after his double stay one night
when he invited him and then the next morning was disappeared, his personality towards
Tn.Golyadkin changes completely becomes nightmare that he was scared before. His first assumption
comes into reality. When he suddenly the morning after night his double was stayed at his house,
bravely, deny him to talking more about what was happened. Start during this time, the main character
experiencing a lot of exile, alienation, and somehow without any reason. Being faced with this
circumstance, he intended to solve all of this vague. He questioned why all of people close with him,
try to far away from him in distances in terms of performances in office and also deals with his
servant, Petrushka since earlier being reluctance about him as an owner that show dissatisfaction and
tend to be rude. There is ironic moment when he attempted to more being nice to people, as much
rude the replies he got. But inside of the heart, contrast within the surface, he cursed them in
speechless way that nobody heard it intentionally. He uttered his condition in intricately ways. It
evident with the letter he write to explain about what the really happen, but the use of words almost
likely confusing the readers and causing misunderstanding as if he deemed as yapping in wasteful
ways without clearly goals.
“Dear Sir Yakov Petrovitch! “I should not take up my pen if my circumstances, and your own action,
sir, had not compelled me to that step. Believe me that nothing but necessity would have induced me to enter
upon such a discussion with you and therefore, first of all, I beg you, sir, to look upon this step of mine not as a
premeditated design to insult you, but as the inevitable consequence of the circumstance that is a bond between
us now.” (“I think that’s all right, proper courteous, though not lacking in force and firmness . . . I don’t think
there is anything for him to take offence at. Besides, I’m fully within my rights,” thought Mr. Golyadkin,
reading over what he had written.) “Your strange and sudden appearance, sir, on a stormy night, after the coarse
and unseemly behaviour of my enemies to me, for whom I feel too much contempt even to mention their names,
was the starting-point of all the misunderstanding existing between us at the present time. Your obstinate desire
to persist in your course of action, sir, and forcibly to enter the circle of my existence and all my relations in
practical life, transgresses every limit imposed by the merest politeness and every rule of civilized society. I
imagine there is no need, sir, for me to refer to the seizure by you of my papers, and particularly to your taking
away my good name, in order to gain the favour of my superiors — favour you have not deserved. There is no
need to refer here either to your intentional and insulting refusal of the necessary explanation in regard to us.
Finally, to omit nothing, I will not allude here to your last strange, one may even say, your incomprehensible
behaviour to me in the coffee-house. I am far from lamenting over the needless — for me — loss of a rouble;
but I cannot help expressing my indignation at the recollection of your public outrage upon me, to the detriment
of my honour, and what is more, in the presence of several persons of good breeding, though not belonging to
my circle of acquaintance.”
In that letter, he declared and clarify himself to ensure his double to do not mess him again
along the ways. But unluckily, everything getting worse when Petrushka create a chaos in drunk
condition supposed to sent the letter to the exact target.
During the time, his exile was continuing and combined with his overthinking about what was
really happened with him and regularly he seems walking back and forth through his room to get out
and hope the peaceful day are coming then. Sometimes, after he was making decision, he rubbing his
hands that might be aims to satisfaction. His double ridiculously always appeared in crucial moments
that he want to take deal with something so that his double appearances someways try to blocked him
and always ended with satire and disrespectful manner.
The fact remains that Mr. Golyadkin senior, apparently knowing what he was doing, of his own free
will, before witnesses, solemnly shook hands with him whom he called his mortal foe. But what was the
amazement, the stupefaction and fury, what was the horror and the shame of Mr. Golyadkin senior, when his
enemy and mortal foe, the dishonourable Mr. Golyadkin junior, noticing the mistake of that persecuted,
innocent, perfidiously deceived man, without a trace of shame, of feeling, of compassion or of conscience,
pulled his hand away with insufferable rudeness and insolence. What was worse, he shook the hand as though it
had been polluted with something horrid; what is more, he spat aside with disgust, accompanying this with a
most insulting gesture; worse still, he drew out his handkerchief and, in the most unseemly way, wiped all the
fingers that had rested for one moment in the hand of Mr. Golyadkin senior. While he did this Mr. Golyadkin
junior looked about him in his characteristic horrid way, took care that every one should see what he was doing,
glanced into people’s eyes and evidently tried to insinuate to every one everything that was most unpleasant in
regard to Mr. Golyadkin senior.
His indecisive personality overall reflected when the story about to the end, precisely when he
received the letter from Klara Olsufyevna to took her and go away with her at exact time when there
is party dance event in her residence. After reading it, he got a panic attack, heavy anxiety, and the
exile moment was perfectly captured since he was stood at restaurant with fragile body and messed
clothes placed him in the middle of people attention around him. Being shock, and overwhelm with it,
he running outside unconsciously and he got himself consciousness in the carriage. Again, he had a
trouble with hesitation to overcoming in which he asked the coachman to waiting for long time for
him to pondering. However, the story was ended with he surprisingly got invited to coming party in
Olsufy Ivanovich residence and everything as if was never been happened, he did not realise what
kind of happiness when he got welcomed and everyone looked smile at him. As the melancholic sense
flow was turndown constantly.
For the conclusion, what is concerned in this analysis is delving to the personality of main
character and its effect to the figures around him, it can be seen many times when he show hesitation
to make a decision and always talk with complicated way and struggle to utter the reveal his intention
and so that people can understand easily. Whenever he tried to solve the trouble, everything all of
sudden getting worse and his under conscious realm put him in terrible position. Somehow, the story
ended by he was visited by the doctor and took him out to living together in distance.
