Range Statement: Material to be communicated is in a simulated professional context:

1. Audiences are engineering peers, academic personnel and related engineering
persons using appropriate formats.
2. Written reports range from short (minimum 300 words) to long (a minimum of 2 000
words excluding tables, diagrams and appendices), covering material at the exit level.
3. Methods of providing information include the conventional methods of the discipline,
for example engineering drawings, physical models, and bills of quantities as well as
subject-specific methods.

This graduate attribute is assessed in the form of this individual assignment.

Assignment brief
eThekwini municipality has requested you to design and call for tenders for a new
Roads & Stormwater Depot.
You are required to:
i. Design a basic layout for the depot for the area for ERF3246 found in
Annexure E. The depot should possess the following structure/structures,
steel roofed encompassing offices for the Superintendent and two
technicians, ablutions for 12 males and 8 females, a small plant storeroom,
an area dedicated for the storage of sand, aggregate and crusher run and
lastly an 1.8m high boundary wall with a 4m entrance access to the depot.
It should also have a paved area for parking of vehicles.
ii. Write a suitable engineering specification for the structure that MUST cover
the following items: geotechnical study, steel roof and concrete elements
and pavement design. Feel free to add more should you deem necessary.
iii. Investigate and report on all applicable municipal and or government bylaws
for such a structure including Floor Area Ratio (FAR), the minimum
number of ablutions and maximum allowable parking bays for the size
for this type of structure. Include this in the discussion and
specifications of your document.
iv. Produce multiple as-built drawings using a computer aided drawing
package for site plan, the various elevations, foundations, layer works
for paving and roof structure. Supplying just one or two drawings showing
site plan and a few elevations is simply not enough.
v. UNTITLED and/or handwritten details on drawings will attract an
automatic ZERO mark for the ENTIRE assessment. Furthermore, all
drawings must be neatly bound with your document and NOT greater
than A3 in size. Any drawings not attached or rolled up will not be
marked.
vi. Produce a Bill of quantities for ALL elements of your design (Earthworks,
concrete, steel roofing trusses, layer-works for paving and foundations).
Show all calculations in the Addendum section of the document.
vii. Write an advert for inclusion in a local newspaper calling for tenderers which
should be located immediately after your contents page.
viii. Use size 12 Arial font with 1 ½ line spacing.
ix. Annexure A (attached) should be your first page immediately after the
cover page.
x. Compile the above into in a neatly bound document in the following opening
sequence: Cover page (provided)
Annexure A - Declaration
Annexure B – Tender document rubric
Annexure C – Oral presentation rubric
Annexure D – GA Evaluation
The above is obligatory and marks will be deducted should they not appear as
the first pages at the start of your document, in the sequence as prescribed
above.
xi. Make submission to your lecturer by no later than 13h00 on Friday, 19 April
2024 at the BTech lab ( you may submit earlier if you wish). Submissions
will not be accepted after this day and time.
xii. Use the first page of this brief as your cover page of your document.
xiii. In a simulated professional context, present your tender to a panel of your
lecturers, peers and moderator at a date and time still to be announced. You
may use PowerPoint slide shows or any other media to enhance your
presentation. Do NOT use your document that you submitted to me as your
presentation visuals.
xiv. Your presentation in MS PowerPoint format should be no longer than
10minutes in length and should cover all the technical aspects of your
design.
xv. Please note well, that test conditions will apply to all presentations. Should
you miss your allotted time slot, a medical certificate will have to be
provided.
xvi. Should you fail the tender document aspect if this assessment i.e achieve
last than 40%, you will be allowed another chance to submit with a new
topic and new deadline.
xvii. Should you not submit on the first attempt, you will not be allowed a
resubmission.
N.B your tender document should be structured as a technical report. Your
document will not be marked if the following are not adhered to:
• Declaration is unsigned
• Drawings have incomplete or completely blank title blocks.
• Drawings are done by hand.
