ABSTRACT
Alcohol and drowsiness are common reasons for vehicle accidents. This research presents the
development of an integrated Alcohol and Drowsiness Detection System aimed at enhancing
driver safety by preventing vehicle accidents caused by impaired driving. The system features
a key ignition access cover coupled with a drowsiness alert mechanism, which utilizes a
speaker to notify the driver of potential risks. A notification system is also incorporated to
provide additional assistance when the driver is detected as either under the influence of
alcohol or exhibiting signs of drowsiness during operation. The efficacy of the system was
evaluated using an MQ3 sensor, which demonstrated a high correlation value of 0.924 for
maximum readings across various alcohol concentration.
EXISTING SYSTEM
The Existing System intelligent alcohol detection and drowsiness monitoring system in
vehicle Standalone devices that measure blood alcohol concentration (BAC) through breath
samples. While effective, they require manual operation and are not integrated with vehicle
systems These systems typically utilize camera-based monitoring to assess driver alertness,
often focusing on eye movement and blinking patterns. However, many are limited by
environmental factors and require visual contact. Some vehicles are equipped with DMS that
combine various sensors to track driver behavior and detect signs of fatigue. However, these
systems may not directly prevent driving under the influence of alcohol. While many modern
vehicles include GPS for navigation, they do not usually integrate safety features that respond
to driver impairment. Some applications provide alerts for driver behavior but often lack real-
time intervention capabilities when impairment is detected.
DRAWBACKS OF EXISTING SYSTEM
PROPOSED SYSTEM
Utilizes a camera to monitor eye movements and calculate the Eye Aspect Ratio
(EAR) to assess driver alertness.
Achieves an accuracy of 0.7903 and an F-score of 0.8088, effectively detecting
drowsiness.
The system offers real-time vehicle location tracking that can be transmitted in
emergencies or instances of severe impairment, and it sends SMS alerts to a registered
contact with the vehicle’s GPS coordinates when impairment is detected.
