ABSTRACT

Alcohol and drowsiness are common reasons for vehicle accidents. This research presents the
development of an integrated Alcohol and Drowsiness Detection System aimed at enhancing
driver safety by preventing vehicle accidents caused by impaired driving. The system features
a key ignition access cover coupled with a drowsiness alert mechanism, which utilizes a
speaker to notify the driver of potential risks. A notification system is also incorporated to
provide additional assistance when the driver is detected as either under the influence of
alcohol or exhibiting signs of drowsiness during operation. The efficacy of the system was
evaluated using an MQ3 sensor, which demonstrated a high correlation value of 0.924 for
maximum readings across various alcohol concentration.

EXISTING SYSTEM

The Existing System intelligent alcohol detection and drowsiness monitoring system in
vehicle Standalone devices that measure blood alcohol concentration (BAC) through breath
samples. While effective, they require manual operation and are not integrated with vehicle
systems These systems typically utilize camera-based monitoring to assess driver alertness,
often focusing on eye movement and blinking patterns. However, many are limited by
environmental factors and require visual contact. Some vehicles are equipped with DMS that
combine various sensors to track driver behavior and detect signs of fatigue. However, these
systems may not directly prevent driving under the influence of alcohol. While many modern
vehicles include GPS for navigation, they do not usually integrate safety features that respond
to driver impairment. Some applications provide alerts for driver behavior but often lack real-
time intervention capabilities when impairment is detected.
DRAWBACKS OF EXISTING SYSTEM

There are some serious drawbacks in existing system. They are:

 Lack of Integration: Most existing systems operate independently, making it

challenging to provide a holistic view of driver safety. For example, a breathalyzer
and a drowsiness detection system may not work together to prevent driving under
combined impairments.
 Manual Operation: Standalone breathalyzers require manual intervention, which can
delay the detection process. Drivers may not use these devices consistently, leading to
potential safety risks.
 Environmental Limitations: Drowsiness detection systems relying on camera-based
monitoring can be affected by lighting conditions, driver positioning, and other
environmental factors, leading to inaccuracies in detection.
 Limited Real-Time Feedback: Many existing systems do not offer immediate
feedback or intervention when impairment is detected. For instance, some
notifications may only provide alerts after unsafe behavior has already occurred.

PROPOSED SYSTEM

We proposed Alcohol and Drowsiness Detection System is a comprehensive, intelligent

solution designed to enhance road safety by preventing drunk driving and reducing accidents
caused by driver fatigue, particularly in India where these issues are prevalent. The system
features a pre-ignition alcohol detection sensor that requires the driver to blow into it before
starting the vehicle; if the alcohol level exceeds a predefined limit, the engine is
automatically disabled, and the vehicle’s GPS coordinates are sent via SMS to a registered
contact for assistance. Additionally, advanced facial and eye movement sensors monitor the
driver for signs of drowsiness, issuing alerts if fatigue is detected. If the driver remains
unresponsive, the engine is automatically shut down, and location data is sent for swift
intervention. With its user-friendly interface, drivers can also receive real-time alerts and
review historical data on their driving sessions, making this system a vital tool in improving
overall road safety and reducing accident rates.

ADVANTAGES OF PROPOSED SYSTEM

The following are the advantages of proposed system:

 By integrating both alcohol and drowsiness detection, the system addresses two major
cause man intervention and effort in searching donors.
 2. The MQ3 sensor exhibits a high correlation value of 0.924, ensuring accurate
alcohol detection across various concentrations, while the 6-point EAR system
provides reliable drowsiness monitoring with an accuracy of 0.7903.
 3.The drowsiness alert system provides audio prompts, encouraging drivers to take
necessary actions in real-time, which can help prevent fatigue-related incidents.
 4. The notification system offers instant alerts to drivers about their impairment status,
fostering awareness and proactive decision-making
MODULES:

MQ3 Alcohol Sensor Module:

 Measures blood alcohol concentration (BAC) through breath analysis.

 Exhibits a high correlation value of 0.924 for accuracy across various alcohol
concentrations.

Drowsiness Detection Module:

 Utilizes a camera to monitor eye movements and calculate the Eye Aspect Ratio
(EAR) to assess driver alertness.
 Achieves an accuracy of 0.7903 and an F-score of 0.8088, effectively detecting
drowsiness.

GPS and GSM Module:

 The system offers real-time vehicle location tracking that can be transmitted in
emergencies or instances of severe impairment, and it sends SMS alerts to a registered
contact with the vehicle’s GPS coordinates when impairment is detected.
