An infectious disease

Is a disease caused by very tiny living

things called germs (pathogens) and
can spread easily between living
organisms.

Many germs are useful and help to keep

our bodies healthy.
What Is a Germ?
The three most common groups of germs (or pathogens) are:

Parasites

viruses

bacteria fungi
Bacteria
Bacteria are tiny organisms made up of just one cell.
Can be seen under microscope.

Some bacteria can cause diseases such as typhoid,

cholera and tuberculosis.

There are some good bacteria for example bacteria that

can change milk can be turned into yoghurt.

Bacteria
Harmful bacteria can make us feel unwell,
for example with food poisoning or a sore
throat..

Viruses
• Viruses are even smaller than bacteria!
• They cannot survive for long by themselves
and so they find another organism to live in.

Viruses
Viruses can cause diseases such as
Covid19 - Ebola - flu & chicken pox

All viruses are harmful and cause

diseases even to the bacteria.

Fungi
• Are living things that are neither plants nor animals.
Some fungi are useful to us such as

Ringworm in humans and athlete’s foot in humans are caused by

Fungi
Histoplasmosis is an infection caused by breathing in spores of a fungus
often found in bird and bat droppings.
Parasites
living things that live on or inside the body and they get their food from
the host.

Most parasites can cause diseases like: malaria, toxoplasmosis and

schistosomiasis

Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite.

The parasite is spread to humans through
the bites of infected mosquitoes.
People who have malaria usually feel very
sick with a high fever
One of the world's most common parasites.
Infection usually occurs by eating undercooked contaminated meat, exposure from
infected cat feces, or mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy.
Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, is an infection caused by a parasitic
worm that lives in fresh water in subtropical and tropical regions.

Within 1-2 months of infection,

symptoms may develop
including fever, cough, and muscle
aches.
