The

Technology
Bolsters
Care Patient engagement flourishes when
technology enables information to be
documented and shared in real time
across the care team. Technology
continues to create opportunities for
caregivers and patients to interact
while also improving and enhancing
the experience for everyone on the
care team.
Enabling Caregivers
Caregivers need reliable access to
data and technology to support flexible
workflows and help keep their focus
on patients. Ergonomic products that
bring technology and supplies to the
point of need and support a variety
of postures meet the unique needs of
caregivers during each shift.
Digital Interfaces
TeleMed is a vital tool in patient care. On-site visits still take place for clinical needs
but technologies like facial recognition, mobile check-ins, in-room virtual assistants,
and robotics are transforming many activities from high-touch to contactless.

Places for Respite
A healthy environment that helps
people feel engaged with their work
entails providing respite spaces—
for the body and mind. These spaces
include the staff room where individuals
can find well deserved relief or teams
can form and develop collegial
relationships. Camaraderie is further
built around community tables, café
tables, and outdoor spaces.

Building
Spaces for
Resilience
Design solutions that support
resilience of space will continue
to be sought for healthcare
facilities. The ability for space
to adapt to change and be
future-ready— whatever it
may be—is the next chapter
of healthcare design.

Cincinnati
Children’s
Hospital
Internationally recognized for improving child health
through research, education, and innovation, Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital Medical Center was ready to take
pediatric research to the next level when it added
a 15-story research tower. Located on the medical
center’s main campus in Avondale, Ohio, the building
has since become a symbol for the hospital’s ongoing
commitment to the not-for-profit organization's cause,
literally bridging research and care.

our scientists and clinicians,
allowing for a more efficient

from the lab to the patient.”

Engage
the Patient For the person at the center
of healthcare—the patient—
the environment must be
a supportive space that
nurtures their healing needs.
Expedited Recovery
Patients need a safe and comforting
experience during treatment and recovery.
Patients, caregivers, and guests appreciate
a calm space design that allows them to
focus on their care. When patients have
more control over their recovery, they can
concentrate on going from hospitalized
to healing. Providing spaces that allow for
changing postures improves health and can
accelerate healing.
32 33
Peace of Mind
Rest and comfort are imperative for the
well-being of patients and visitors. Offering
solutions so that guests can stay with loved
ones—and caregivers can reduce patient
stress by keeping the families together—
is the ultimate goal.
34 35
36 37
Streamlined Workflow
Nurses and physicians need a well-designed
space that allows access to data and technology
to support flexible workflows and to help
keep their focus on patients. Workstations that
are flexible with height adjustability or wall
mounted worksurfaces bring technology and
supplies to the caregiver and support postures
during each shift to increase quality care while
preventing burnout and disengagement.
Empower
the Caregiver
Caregiver work is unique from other types of work. Clinicians
are highly trained and possess the expertise of knowledge work
with the physical work demands of procedures, patient handling,
and constant movements within the care activity base. To create
the best care space for the caregiver, and ultimately the patient,
several important factors—and what the environment offers the
people using it—need to be mastered.
38 39
Advanced Ergonomics
A caregiver's ability to easily and accurately
enter patient data, medical orders, medication
information, and other informatics relies on
the correct positioning of the monitor and
keyboard—and the flexibility to face the
patient while entering data. Additionally,
many common tasks for hospital workers
require awkward postures that lead to physical
discomfort of pain, exhaustion, and data entry
errors. The right workflow technology tools,
like ergonomic seating, adjustable-position
keyboards and monitors, height-adjustable
workstations, and mobile equipment help
caregivers feel—and perform—their best.
Maximum Cleanability
Give caregivers peace of mind and assurance when disinfecting
surfaces. Task seating is one of the most frequently touched
surfaces in the workplace, so having finish options such as
bleach cleanable faux leather upholstery are critical to meet
workplace health and safety standards.

Foster the
Community
Community spaces are areas in a healthcare
facility that patients, family, and friends
use while they wait for care or their loved
one. These spaces offer amenities to foster
relaxation, support privacy, allow people to
catch up on work, or offer a bite to eat.
46 47
Leveraging Outdoor Space
Healing gardens and walking paths have been
a vital part of health system campuses and
hospital grounds for the last decade or more,
mostly focused on patients and families.
Given the challenges of the last few years, the
importance of these landscaped amenities
grew for every constituency within the
healthcare campus.
