IMO Model Course 2.03 – Advanced Fire Fighting

Scope
This model course aims to provide the training in advanced firefighting in accordance with Section A-
VI/3 of the STCW Code. The emphasis of the training is in organization, tactics and command.

Objective
This syllabus covers the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention Chapter VI, Section A-VI/3 and
Table A-VI/3. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in advanced firefighting, a trainee will
be competent to take command, organize and train fire parties and control fire-fighting operations. The
seafarer will have acquired a knowledge of fire prevention and an ability to inspect and service fire
detection and extinguishing systems and equipment. He will also be able to investigate and report on
incidents involving fire.

Entry standards
The course is open to seafarers who have completed basic training in fire prevention. All trainees must
be certified by a doctor to be in good health.

1.11. Tactics and procedure of fire control for oil, chemical and gas tankers
1.12. Use of water for fire extinguishing, the effect on stability precautions and
corrective procedures
1.13. Communication and co-ordination during fire-fighting operations
1.14. Ventilation control including smoke extractor
1.15. Control of fuel and electrical systems
1.16. Fire precautions and hazards associated with the storage and handling of
materials (paints etc)
1.17. Management and control of injured persons
1.18. Procedures for co-ordination with shore-based fire fighters

Cost
Class minimum - 5 persons
Training, books, admin fees - TT $3800.00 per person
