DESCRIBING AND GIVING THE

VALUE OF NUMBERS EXPRESSED

IN EXPONENTIAL NOTATION
for Mathematics Grade 6
Quarter 2 / Week 5
FOREWORD
This Self-Learning Kit is made to further improve your critical
thinking and problem solving skills. It will serve as a guide in
describing and giving the value of numbers expressed in
exponential notation. It will help you enhance your skills in
writing and evaluating exponential expressions.

In this learning kit, the pupils will also gain knowledge in

describing and giving the value of numbers expressed in
exponential notation.

The following are the special and unique features of the Self-
Learning Kit:

A. WHAT HAPPENED The pupils are ask to answer activities that

will allow them to apply what they have learned prior to
the discussion of the learning competency.

B. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW This is the part where the learning
competency/ies is/are being discussed.

C. WHAT HAVE I It aims to check the pupils

LEARNED
understanding of the learning competency in describing
and giving the value of numbers expressed in
exponential notation.

Math is fun. We hope that this Self-Learning Kit will help our
dear pupils to enhance their mathematical skills that would
soon be applied in their everyday life.

2
OBJECTIVES:
• Describes the exponent and the base in a number expressed
in a simple expression using exponent and vice versa
• Rewrites a simple expression using exponent and vice versa.
• Shows perseverance in evaluating expressions expressed in
exponential notation.

Exponents and Exponential Notation

A number in exponential notation has a base and exponent. The base is

the repeated factor. The exponent tells how many times the base is used as
a factor.

Evaluating an Exponential Expression

Step 1 58 = 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5

Step 2 Use the associative property of multiplication

58 = (5 x 5) (5 x 5) (5 x 5) (5 x 5)

58 = (25) (25) (25) (25)

Step 3 Group it further until you get the value.

58 = (25 x 25) (25 x 25)

58 = (625) (625)

58 = 625 x 625
58 = 390, 625

Therefore, the value of 58 is 390, 625

Powers of 10 and Zero Power

1. Numerical expressions such as 101, 102, 103, and so on are

called powers of 10.
Example:
100, 000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10
• There are five zeros in 100, 000 so, 10 is used 5 times
as a factor.
• To write 100, 000 in exponential notation we have,
100, 000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 105

➢ 1000 = 10 x 10 x 10 = 103
➢ 10, 000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 10 4
➢ 1, 000, 000 = 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 10 6

2. When a number, except 0, is raised to the zero power, the

result will always be 1.
Example:
➢ -180 = 1
➢ 140 = 1
