8.3 Surface Area of Prisms and Pyramids
8.3 Surface Area of Prisms and Pyramids
The surface area of an object is the sum of the areas of its outside surfaces. (How much material is
needed to build an object)
𝑆 = 2𝑙𝑤 + 2𝑤ℎ + 2ℎ
Or
𝑆 = 2(𝑙𝑤 + 𝑤ℎ + 2ℎ
Example 1:
𝑆 = 2(4 × 2 + 2 × 1 + 4 × 1)
𝑆 = (2)14
2
𝑆 = 28𝑚𝑚
Example 2: What is the total surface area of a room that has the following measurements?
𝑆 = 2(3. 4 × 4. 2 × 4. 2 × 3. 0 × 3. 4 × 3. 0)
𝑆 = (2)37. 08
2
𝑆 = 74. 16𝑚
Part 2: Surface Area of Triangular Prisms

Example 5: Find the surface area of the following cylinder:
2
𝑆𝐴 = 2𝝅(3) + 2𝝅(3)(4)
=2𝝅(9) + 2𝝅(12)
= 56. 55 + 75. 4
2

2
𝑆𝐴 = 2𝝅(3. 1) + 2𝝅(3. 1)(10)
=2𝝅(9. 61) + 2𝝅(31)
= 60. 381410802 + 194. 778744523

𝑅𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑑 = 255. 16𝑖𝑛.
Example 7: A modern example of a pyramid can be found at the Louvre in Paris, France. The glass square
based pyramid was built as an entrance to this famous museum. Calculate the surface area of the pyramid
including the square base.
