3 Surface Area of Prisms and Pyramids

MPM1D
Jensen

The surface area of an object is the sum of the areas of its outside surfaces. (How much material is
needed to build an object)

Part 1: Surface Area of Rectangular Prisms

The formula for a rectangular prism is:

𝑆 = 2𝑙𝑤 + 2𝑤ℎ + 2ℎ
Or
𝑆 = 2(𝑙𝑤 + 𝑤ℎ + 2ℎ
Example 1:
𝑆 = 2(4 × 2 + 2 × 1 + 4 × 1)
𝑆 = (2)14
2
𝑆 = 28𝑚𝑚

Example 2: What is the total surface area of a room that has the following measurements?

𝑆 = 2(3. 4 × 4. 2 × 4. 2 × 3. 0 × 3. 4 × 3. 0)
𝑆 = (2)37. 08
2
𝑆 = 74. 16𝑚
Part 2: Surface Area of Triangular Prisms

How Can We Find the Surface Area of a Triangular Prism?

Add the areas of all 4sides.

Note: The triangular ends are equal in area

SA= Area of RECT + 2Area of TRI

Example 3: Find the surface

area of the following triangular prism

𝑏ℎ
Area of triangular base = 2

(12)(13.4)
= 2

160.8
= 2

2
= 80. 4𝑐𝑚

Area of Rectangle 1 = 𝑙 × 𝑤
𝑇𝑅𝐼1 = 10 × 13. 4 𝑇𝑅𝐼2 = 12 × 10 𝑇𝑅𝐼3 = 18 × 10
= 134𝑐𝑚 = 120𝑐𝑚 = 180𝑐𝑚
Area of Rectangle 2 = Area of Rectangle 3 = Total Surface area = Area of rectangles +
2(Area of triangular base)
134 + 120 + 180 + 80. 4(2)
= 134 + 120 + 180 + 160. 8
2
= 594. 8𝑐𝑚

Example 4: Find the surface area of the following triangular prism

Note: All 3 sides of the triangular base are equal.

This means that all three of the rectangular sides
will be congruent.
Area of triangular base = Area of rectangle =
3.6(3)
𝑇𝑅𝐼 = 2 𝑅𝐸𝐶𝑇 = 3. 5 × 3
= 10.8
2
= 10. 5
2
= 5. 4𝑐𝑚
Total Surface Area = 3(Area of rectangle) + 2(Area of triangular base)
= 5. 4(2) + 10. 5(3)
= 10. 8 + 31. 5
2
= 42. 3𝑐𝑚

Part 3: Surface Area of a Cylinder

𝑆𝑢𝑟𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝐴 𝐶𝑦𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟 = 2(𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑦𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟) + 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒

2
𝑆𝑢𝑟𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝐴 𝐶𝑦𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟 = 2𝝅𝑟 + 2𝝅𝑟ℎ
Example 5: Find the surface area of the following cylinder:
2
𝑆𝐴 = 2𝝅(3) + 2𝝅(3)(4)
=2𝝅(9) + 2𝝅(12)
= 56. 55 + 75. 4
2
= 131. 95𝑓𝑡

Example 6: Find the surface area of the following cylinder:

2
𝑆𝐴 = 2𝝅(3. 1) + 2𝝅(3. 1)(10)
=2𝝅(9. 61) + 2𝝅(31)
= 60. 381410802 + 194. 778744523
= 255. 160155325
2
𝑅𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑑 = 255. 16𝑖𝑛.

Part 4: Surface Area of a Pyramid

Example 7: A modern example of a pyramid can be found at the Louvre in Paris, France. The glass square
based pyramid was built as an entrance to this famous museum. Calculate the surface area of the pyramid
including the square base.
SApyramid = Abase + 4Atriangle

Note: This formula only works for a

pyramid with a square base

(27.8)(35)
𝑇𝑟𝑖 = 2
𝑆𝑞𝑟 = 35 × 35
973
= 2
= 1125
= 486. 5
2
486. 5(4) + 1125 = 3071𝑚
