3.4 The Chain Rule

Goals
 A justification of the Chain Rule by interpreting derivatives as rates of change.
 The use of the Chain Rule to compute derivatives.

Def: : If g is differentiable at x and f is differentiable at g(x ), then the composite function F=f ° gdefined by
F ( x )=f (g ( x )) is differentiable at x and F ' is given by the product
F ' (x)=f ( g ( x ) ) g ' (x )
'

In Leibniz notation, if y=f (u) and u=g (x) are both differentiable functions, then
dy dy du
=
dx du dx

Generalized Power Rule: If n is any real number andu=g (x) is differentiable, then
d n
( u ) =n un−1 du
dx dx
Alternatively,
d n n−1
[ g(x ) ] =n [ g (x) ] ∙ g ' ( x)
dx
