Title: Chain Drives
Introduction
A chain drive is a mechanical system used to transmit power between two or more rotating
shafts using a chain and sprockets
Components
1. Sprockets: Toothed wheels that engage with the chain.
2. Chain: Made up of interconnected links that mesh with the sprocket teeth.
3. Tensioners: Maintain proper chain tension to prevent slippage.
Types of Chain Drives
1. Roller Chains: Commonly used, consisting of inner and outer plates connected by rollers.
2. Silent Chains: Have inverted teeth for quieter operation.
3. Engineering Plastic Chains: Lightweight and corrosion-resistant

Procedure
Speed Ratio Verification
• Ensure the chain drive system is properly assembled with the chain tensioned correctly.
• Measure and record the diameters of the driver sprocket (D) and the driven sprocket (d).
• Use a marker or chalk to mark a reference point on both the driver and driven sprockets.
• Calculate the theoretical speed ratio using

• Give 1 rotation to driver sprocket using string and observe the number of rotations of the
driven sprocket.
• Calculate experimental speed ratio.
• Compare the theoretical with experimental results.
Efficiency Calculation
• Attach masses of 70, 100 and 130g to the driven pulley attached on the sprocket.
• Start attaching masses to the driver pulley.
• Keep adding mass until both the sides are balanced.
• Measure the mass on the driver pulley.
• Calculate the efficiency of system using

• Observe the effect of increasing weight on the efficiency of system.

Discussion
The experiment was aimed at studying the Chain drives and their benefits over belt drive.
They have high torque capacity and don’t have the problem of slippage. They can also work in
harsh environments.
The experiment also aimed at verifying the speed ratio of belt drive using 2 sprockets and
chain. The theoretical ratio was verified with experimenting ratio.
The efficiency of the chain drive increases with increasing mass on driven side which can
be seen on the graph due to

decrease in the factor in the denominator after 1 as P_out is increasing more than P_fric.
The errors in the experiment are due to various reasons like Friction in pulleys, faulty
apparatus, and human errors.
Conclusion
The experiment helped us understand Chain drives and verifying the speed ratio of the
Chain drive, and its efficiency and objectives of the experiment are fulfilled.
