Optimizing Tra c Control: An

Advanced Management System

Introduction
Urbanization in Ethiopian cities like Addis Ababa
has led to significant traffic congestion, as
traditional traffic management methods struggle to
cope.

Pervasive systems, using advanced technologies

such as sensors, data analytics, and automation,
offer a solution.

This project aims to design a Traffic Control

Manager that leverages these technologies to
create an intelligent, adaptive traffic management
system, improving traffic flow, reducing congestion,
and enhancing safety in urban transportation.
Problem Description
Traffic Congestion: Rapid urbanization leads
to vehicle overload and inefficient traffic light
timing.
Inefficient Public Transit: Overcrowded
minibuses with unreliable schedules and
limited routes.
Safety Concerns: Vulnerable road users face
inadequate infrastructure and poor traffic
rule adherence.
Data Blindness: Reliance on manual,
inaccurate, and non-real-time traffic data.
Scenario Description
Morning Commute Scenario:
User Profiles:
Aster: A daily commuter who takes public
transportation to work.
Beimnet: A blue taxi with a fixed start and
destination point.
Leul: A traveler with a personal vehicle
planning to visit their friend that day.
City Traffic operator : oversees and manages
the data logged from the processors, might
use that information to make policy changes..
REQUIREMENTS
Data Collection
Data Processing and Analysis
Dynamic Traffic Control
Traveler Information Service
Public Displays
Incident Management System
Requirements
Data Collection
Input: video footage from
high-resolution cameras. Inductive loop sensors
generate electrical
signals in response to vehicle presence, and
anonymized data from GPS
smartphones or dedicated GPS units from
vehicles in coordinates.
Processing:Edge computing, Raw electrical
signals of vehicles passing over loops are
converted to meaningful traffic data (presence,
count, speed).GPS data (latitude, longitude,
speed direction and timestamps) is transmitted
to central server.
Output:
Send real-time information on vehicle density,
speed, flow, and incident alerts.Data from the
anonymized Gps and the camera’s could be sent
to the central processor using cellular networks.
Large video footages and data from loops could
be transmitted using LoRaWan(long range wide
Area Network).
Requirements
Data Processing and Analysis
Input: Aggregated data from the data collection
infrastructure,including high-resolution cameras,
inductive loop detectors, crowd-sourced
GPS data, and other sensors.

Processing: Real-Time Analytics, Model Training,

Predictive Analytics

Output:insights in structured data formats (JSON,

CSV).

Implement machine learning algorithms to

analyze historical and real-time data for traffic
prediction, incident detection, and optimization
of traffic flow.
Traffic Light Control:

Export data as control commands and electrical

signals for traffic light systems.
Public Displays:

Format data as text, images, and color codes.

Use JSON and XML formats for integration with
content management systems.
Traveler Information App:
Requirements
Dynamic Traffic Control
Input: Real-time data on traffic conditions from
the central traffic management platform. This
real time data includes information on the
duration of each signal phase.

Processing:
The AI analyzes real-time data (such as traffic
flow, congestion, and pedestrian activity) to
determine the optimal signal timing.
It considers factors like the number of vehicles
waiting, pedestrian crossings, and emergency
vehicle priority.Based on this analysis, the AI
adjusts the duration of each signal
phase dynamically. If an emergency vehicle
approaches, the AI can shorten the red phase
in its direction and extend the green phase for
other directions. Extending
the green phase for the congested direction to
clear them out.
Output: “green wave”: Vehicles
traveling at a certain speed can encounter
green lights at consecutive intersections,
without impediment.This improves traffic
flow and reduces stops Dynamic changes to
traffic signal timings to alleviate congestion
and improve travel times.
Requirements
Traveller Information Service
Input: Real-time traffic updates from
the central traffic management platform.
Numerical input indicating
severity that is going to be transformed into color
codes in the app

Processing: Integration with mapping APIs and

mobile development frameworks to
provide congestion view and push notifications to
travelers.
Google Maps Integration:Google Maps API Key
Embed Google Maps, Custom Overlay, Traffic
Data Overlay

Output: Real-time traffic information

delivered to travelers via mobile applications
and in-vehicle
navigation systems. In case of major road
accidents or persistent
blockages, push notifications are sent to the
users.
Requirements
Public Displays
Input: Real-time traffic updates from the central
traffic management
platform.

Processing: Content Management Systems, Data

Integration, Custom Signage Display

Output:
Real-time Traffic Information: Displayed at
major intersections, bus stops, and taxi stands,
showing travelers the current traffic conditions
and potential delays.
Visual Indicators: Signs show color-coded traffic
conditions and icons for incidents or blockages
Requirements
Incident Management System
Input: Real-time incident data from the edge
computing devices and the central management
system. Algorithms detect anomalies, such as
sudden stops, collisions, and traffic congestion
spikes. Extreme cases of these are recorded as
incidents, aster comparing with past data.

Processing:Incident detection algorithms analyze

data to automatically generate alerts to be
sent not just as push notifications to users. but as
messages to the administrators.

Output:Real-time notifications sent to emergency

services and travelers.

Detailed incident reports sent to city

administrators.
Implementation Strategy
Data Collection Infrastructure: Deploy high-
resolution cameras, inductive loop detectors,
and crowd-sourced data collection methods
throughout the city.
Central Traffic Management Platform: Utilize
a cloud-based platform for data aggregation,
processing, and analysis.
Dynamic Traffic Control: Implement real-time
adjustments to traffic signals based on current
conditions.
Traveler Information Service: Develop mobile
applications and public displays offering real-
time traffic updates and route suggestions.
Incident Management System: Automate
detection and alerting of traffic incidents for
efficient response and resolution.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the advanced management system
for traffic control represents a significant leap
forward in addressing urban congestion. By
leveraging advanced technology and data-driven
insights, we can create more efficient and
sustainable urban environments for all.
