 Definition of parts of speech
Parts of speech are categories of words based on
their function in a sentence. They help structures and
convey meaning.
 Kinds of part of speech
1. Nouns
Words that name people, places, things, or ideas.
Examples: dog, city, cat, Mr. Johnson, happiness,
anger, and many more.
Nouns are used when referring to a person, place,
thing, or idea in a sentence.
Examples:
1. The book is on the table. (book and table are
nouns)
2. I turn on the fan, because it is really hot. (fan
is a noun)
3. I need my charger. (charger is a noun)
4. She is not a waitress. (waitress is a noun)
5. Lion is big and strong. (lion is a noun)
2. Pronouns
Words that replace nouns to avoid repetition.
Examples: he, she, it, they, we, us, our, and others.
Pronouns are used to replace a noun previously
mentioned or understood.
Examples:

1. My father is a teacher. He takes care of his
family very well. (He and his are pronouns)
2. Bali is a beautiful place. It has really nice view
and the people there are so kind. They always
smile at you, when you go there. (It and They
are pronouns)
3. My name is Zahra. I live in Pekanbaru. My job is
a student. I study in state senior high school 9
Pekanbaru. (My and I are pronouns)
4. Joko and I are bestie. We always ride bicycle to
school. (We are pronouns)
5. Today is our turn to clean the classroom. My
friend and I do it quickly. (our, my and I are
pronouns)
3. Verbs
Words that express actions or states of being.
Examples: run, sleep, eat, sneeze, caught, swim, is,
am, are, was, were, type, fly, and many more.
Verbs are used to describe an action or state in
sentences.
Example:
1. He reminds me that I have homework.
(Remind and have are verbs.)
2. She buys a new car. (buy is a verb)
3. I will never yield. (yield is a verb)
4. I planted this plant yesterday. (planted is a
verb)
5. My mother waters flower every day. (water is
a verb)

4. Adjectives
Words that describe or modify nouns.
Examples: big, strong, amazing, clean, crazy, blue,
white, tall, skinny, fat and many more.
Adjectives are used to provide more detail about a
noun.
Examples:
1. She wore a beautiful dress. (beautiful is an
adjective)
2. My bathroom is spotless. (spotless is an
adjective)
3. I have 2 brothers. My first brother is big and
handsome man, and my second brother is tall
and muscular man. (big, handsome, tall and
muscular are adjectives)
4. They have blonde hair. (blonde is an
adjective)
5. The movie is so entertaining. I am entertained
by it. (entertaining and entertained are
adjectives)
5. Adverbs
Words that modify verbs, adjectives, or other
adverbs.
Examples: quickly, very, always, seldom, well, and
many more.
Adverbs are used to describe how, when, where, or
to what extent an action is performed.

Examples:
1. He runs quickly. (quickly is an adverb)
2. They never sleep while studying. (never is an
adverb)
3. She speaks English and Mandarin well. (well is
an adverb)
4. She is very lucky. (very is an adverb)
5. You are extremely funny. (extremely is an
adverb)
6. Prepositions
Words that show the relationship between a noun
(or pronoun) and other words in a sentence.
Examples: in, on, at, under, below, above, behind,
between, besides, in front of and many more.
Prepositions are used to indicate location, time, or
direction.
Examples:
1. The plane flies above the sky. (above is a
preposition)
2. The cat is under the table. (under is a
preposition)
3. I am at restaurant. (at is a preposition)
4. I live in Jakarta. (in is a preposition)
7. Conjunctions
Words that connect words, phrases, or clauses.
Examples: and, but, or, yet, so, both….and, either…
or, therefore, moreover and many more.

Conjunctions are used to link elements in a
sentence.
Examples:
1. I want coffee and tea. (and is a conjunction)
2. I was reading a book when you came
yesterday. (when is a conjunction)
3. Both the movie and the book are entertaining.
(both and is a conjunction)
4. I take a shower then I prepare myself to go to
school. (then is a conjunction)
5. She called me yesterday, but I didn’t answer.
(but is a conjunction)

4. Interjections
Words or phrases that express strong emotion or
surprise.
Examples: oh, wow, hey, oh my god, ouch and
others.
Interjections are used to convey a reaction or
emotion.
Examples:
1. Wow, that’s amazing. (wow is an interjection)
2. Ouch, my stomach is hurt. (ouch is an
interjection)
3. Damn! that is dope. (damn is an interjection)
4. Oh yeah, we are going to Europe. (oh yeah is
an interjection)

I. Label the parts of speech for the bold words in
the following sentences.
1. He finished his homework.
2. Sean is working at the computer.
3. Will you help me move tomorrow?
4. She has been sick for three days.
