QUICK RESPONSE (QR) CODES

QR Codes:
 Another type of barcode
 Made up of matrix of filled in dark squares on a light background
 Can considerably hold more information than barcodes
Structure:
 Consists of block of small light and dark squares called pixels.
 It can represents 4296 characters or upto 7089 digits, compared to max 30 digits of barcode
 Allows internet address to be encoded within QR code
 3 large squares in the corners function a s form of alignment
 Remaining small square at the bottom right corner is used to ensures correct size and correct
angle of camera show if the QR code is read.
Working:
 Using built in camera on smartphone or tablet and by downloading a QR app scan code
 The app will process image taken by camea, converting squares to readable data
 Browser software in device automatically reads the data generated by app and it also decides
any web address contained within the QR code
 The user is redirected automatically to website or phone app (if phone no is embedded)
 If QR contains a boarding pass it will automatically be sent to the phone/ tablet.
Uses:
 Advertising products
 Giving automatic access to website or telephone numbers
 Storing boarding passes electronically at airports and train stations
Advantages in comparison with Barcodes:
 Can hold much more information than barcodes
 Fewer errors, higher capacity allows the use of built in error checking systems (normal barcodes
have almost no data redundancy, data which is duplicated, therefore it isn't possible to guard
against badly printed or damaged barcodes.)
 Easier to read as they don't need expensive laser or LEDs, can be read from cameras
 Easier to transmit QR codes as texts messages or images
 It is also possible to encrypt QR codes giving extra protection
Disadvantages:
 More than 1 format available
 Can be used to transfer malicious codes called "atagging" since they can be generated by
anyone freely, malicious codes can be written and sent which is why when it's scanned, the
creator can get access to the person's data or the user can be directed to a fake website, or a
virus can be downloaded on the device
Frame QR codes:
 Increased ability to add advertising logos
 Have a 'canvas' area where graphics and images can be added inside the code itself.
 Unlike normal codes, software to do this is not free.
