VIETNAM
As per Food Diversification Law in the
country of Vietnam , Locals are
encourage to innovate food products
such as paddy rice substitute. To
achieve food self sufficiency and food
security by making regulation as
outlined in Act No. 18/2012 about the
importance of food diversification
programs to strengthen national food
security.
CHINA
Profitable versus nutritional value. In exchange of
profit research has shown that certain rice
factories in China have been producing a “fake
rice substitute” in place of popular and more
expensive Wuchang rice, for greater profit.
According to the Korean Times, this food fraud is
being created using a mixture of potatoes, sweet
potatoes, and synthetic resin (plastic) .
The rice substitute is then sprayed with a
fragrance to mimic the smell of
Wuchang Rice, making it difficult
to decipher between the two versions.
It has been confirmed by the article
that rice samples taken from the Bekasi store
contained polyvinyl chloride (PVC) usually
found in plastic pipes, as well as
plasticizer chemical substances usually
found in hydraulic tools and electric
capacitors ( uotechnology.edu.iq/.. )

Wuchang rice, a specialty of Wuchang City, Harbin City,
Heilongjiang Province, is a national geographic
indication product of China.

PRODUCT FEATURES
Wuchang City's high-quality natural resources endow Wuchang rice with unique quality. This
kind of climate condition makes the local rice full of grains, hard texture, bright rice grain, and
rich flavor. The rice has a lot of dry matter accumulation, high nutrient content, and high
content of soluble double-chain sugar, so it tastes delicious. In addition, due to high
amylopectin content, rice is oily, if you pour a bowl of rice into another bowl, the empty bowl
is full of oil beads, and even a grain of rice can not be hung. The rice is light and sweet, soft
and sticky, fragrant and refreshing.

As a curious consumer, hearing allegations about


this Rice producer, I would want to know about the
Rice Products more than usual. The tendency of
Korea’s allegations appraise the exposure of the
Company and create more sales on Wuchang’s
Part.

The Companies; Anhui Huainan Shoucian Yongliang Rice
Industry, Oils, and Food Technology; and Huainan Chufeng
Industry and Trade sold local rice breeds with artificial
scent and flavouring and passed it off as Thai Jasmine Rice.
The factories processed the rice and used pyrazine and
pyrrole to scent their products.
Both pyrazine and pyrrole are considered illegal food
flavorings in China.

Though in this report, the highlight is counterfeiting
Thai Jasmine Rice, there is still the inclusion of
chemical usage and illegal use of chemicals which is
prohibited.

The Straits Times of Singapore has reported that
plastic rice, made from POTATOES and SWEET
POTATOES with synthetic resin molded into the
shape of real rice, is said to have made its way into
countries with large rural populations such as India,
Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Malaysia’s health ministry was reported to be


aware of the allegation circulating on social media
that fake rice was being produced in CHINA and
that it was then exported to a number of Asian
countries like Vietnam, Thailand, and Pakistan

because it imports a big portion of its imported rice from
Vietnam.

Vietnam arrived April 2015 ( Doronila ,2015)

ARTIFICIAL RICE
Artificial rice is made from non-paddy rice flour that is molded
into a rice grain shape using extrusion technology. Extrusion
technology is a process of flowing food ingredients by force
through pressure, a large incision in high-temperature
conditions, and passing it through a die to form an extrudate
(Valencia & Puwanto).
This process was made to support food diversification
program to achieve food security in Indonesia. Indonesian
researchers have developed artificial rice products by
utilizing local resources such as corn, sorghum, spices,
tubers , and others to obtain and artificial rice with
improved nutritional and functional characters that have
some health benefits such as antidiabetic , antioxidant ,
antihypertensive, and anticancer.

Benefits of Artificial Rice in the context of
food diversification in VIETNAM
Artificial Rice is usually designed to has a low
Glycemic Index (GI) and good nutritional values,
minimally equal to paddy rice

Artificial rice that is made from local resources usually has a


high dietary fiber , with some having bioactivity functions. It
can easily be fortified with naturally functional ingredients ,
such as vegetables , fruits , or other forticant , such as
vitamins , folate , iodine , that brings health benefits like
antidiabetic , antioxidant, antihypertensive, and anticancer.
Artificial Rice can also be fortified using waste, such as
eggshells and fishbones to produce high-calcium artificial rice.
