Assignment II
1. (a) A 4-pole, 400 V, 3-phase induction motor has a standstill rotor emf of 100 V per phase.
The rotor has a resistance of 50 milli ohms per phase and a standstill reactance of 0.5 ohms
per phase. Calculate the maximum torque developed by the motor and the slip at which it
occurs. Neglect stator impedance drop. (b) A 3-phase induction motor at rated voltage and
frequency has a maximum torque of 275 percent and a starting torque of 125 percent of full-
load torque. Determine the slip (i) at maximum torque and (ii) at full load torque. Assume
constant rotor resistance and neglect stator resistance and rotational losses.
2. The maximum torque of a 3-phase squirrel-cage induction motor is 3 times the full-load torque
and starting torque is 1.5 times the full-load torque. For negligible stator resistance, compute,
(a) slip at maximum torque, (b) full-load slip, and (c) starting current in terms of full-load
current.
3. A separately excited dc motor, fed from silicon-controlled rectifiers has the following
data: Total resistance of motor armature and SCR circuit = 0.04 ohm, Total
inductance of motor armature and SCR circuit = zero, Source voltage at no-load =
250 V, Inertia of rotating parts, J = 50 kg-m2, Electromechanical conversion constant
for motor, Km = 2 Nm/armature amp. Friction and windage is negligible. (a) If the dc
motor takes a no-load current of 10 A, find the motor no-load speed. (b) With the
motor running at no-load, a load torque of 600 Nm is suddenly applied to the motor
shaft. Find (i) the speed as a function of time and (ii) the ultimate speed drop.
4. A 230 V, separately-excited d.c. motor is driving a constant load torque, with the following
data:
ra = 0.4Ω; La = 0.01 H; rf = 115Ω.
Motor torque constant, Km = MdIf = 2 Nm/armature amp.
Friction and windage constant, i.e. D=0. The armature current is 50 amperes, with rated
voltage across the armature and field. Determine the magnitude of constant load torque. If the
armature voltage is suddenly by 20 volts, find the speed as a function of time. Total J = 12
