MATH 1151 – Applied Calculus – Fall 2024

Practice Midterm #1

– NOT FOR GRADES; JUST FOR PRACTICE –

– DO NOT HAND THIS IN TO BE GRADED –

Week of September 30, 2024 Total marks: 24

First Name:

Family Name:

Lab Section: Tues. 2:30–3:50 Wed. 2:30–3:50 Thurs. 2:30–3:50

(circle one) Tues. 4:00–5:20 Wed. 4:00–5:20 Thurs. 4:00–5:20

This midterm contains 6 questions. There are a total of 24 points available to be earned.

Show your work for all questions, and justify your answers. Answer questions in the space provided. There
is a blank page at the end of this midterm that you can detach and use for rough work (which will not be
graded). If you want something on the final blank page graded, indicate this clearly.

Course notes, textbooks, and other external resources are not permitted. A Casio fx-300MS calculator is
permitted; other calculators are not.

Some formulas that may be useful are included here (you will get these same formulas on the real midterm):

1. Select the correct answer. Select only one answer; selecting more than one will result in a mark of zero
on that question.
(a) [1 mark] What is the number e?
⃝ The growth rate for every population.
⃝ Another name for π.
⃝ The maximum time unit for every compound interest scenario.
⃝ A number for which the derivative of loge (x) is equal to 1/x.
⃝ A number that is approximately equal to 1.618.
(b) [1 mark] For a function f , which of the following properties is not equivalent to the others?
⃝ f is linear.
⃝ The graph of f is a straight (and non-vertical) line.
⃝ The derivative of f is constant.
⃝ f has constant additive rate of change.
⃝ f has constant multiplicative rate of change.
(c) [1 mark] Which of the following is the definition of f ′ (x)?
⃝ lim f (x)
x→a
f (x + h) − f (x)
⃝ lim
x→0 h
f (x + h) − f (x)
⃝ lim
h→0 h
f (x) − f (x + h)
⃝ lim
x→0 h
f (x) − f (x + h)
⃝ lim
h→0 h
(d) [1 mark] Which of the following functions has derivative equal to sin(x)?
[Side note: Please read the question carefully – I am not asking you to take the derivative of sin(x).]
⃝ f (x) = sin(x)
⃝ f (x) = − sin(x)
⃝ f (x) = cos(x)
⃝ f (x) = − cos(x)
⃝ f (x) = ln(x)
(e) [1 mark] If lim+ f (x) = 7, what can you conclude about the function f ?
x→4
⃝ f has a vertical asymptote at x = 4.
⃝ f has a vertical asymptote at x = 7.
⃝ f has a horizontal asymptote at y = 4.
⃝ f has a horizontal asymptote at y = 7.
⃝ None of the above.

2. [2 marks] Find the derivative of f (x) = 4x7 − 3ex + 2x1/3 . You may use any method, and you do not
need to simplify your final answer.

3. [5 marks] Find all vertical and horizontal asymptotes of the following function:

x2 − 9
f (x) = .
2x2 − 4x − 6

4. In class, we learned a formula for computing APY from APR, given that interest is compounded n times
(it is on the front page of this midterm).
(a) [2 marks] Come up with a formula for computing APR from APY (again, given that interest is
compounded n times).

(b) [1 mark] In September 2019, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce offered a savings account
with 2.200% APY. Assuming that they compounded interest monthly, what was the APR of that
savings account? State your answer as a percentage that is accurate to at least 3 decimal places.

(c) [1 mark] If you deposited $100 into the account from part (b), how much money would be in the
account after 10 years?

5. [2 marks] A cake is placed in a hot oven to bake. The temperature, H, in degrees Celsius, of the cake t
minutes after being placed in the oven is given by H = f (t).
What is the practical meaning of f ′ (3)? Do you expect f ′ (3) to be positive or negative? Explain your
answers in words.

6. The flash unit on a camera operates by storing charge on a capacitor and releasing it suddenly when
the flash is set off. The following data describe the charge Q remaining on the capacitor (measured in
microcoulombs) at time t (measured in seconds).

Time (t) 0.00 0.02 0.04 0.06 0.08 0.10

Charge (Q) 100.00 81.87 67.03 54.88 44.93 36.76

(a) [2 marks] How could you determine whether the given data is modelled better by a linear function
or an exponential function? Explain in approximately two sentences using proper grammar. You do
not actually have to decide whether linear or exponential is better.

(b) [3 marks] (Approximately) fit an exponential function to the given data by using the leftmost and
rightmost data points.

(c) [1 mark] Use your formula from part (b) to estimate how much charge would remain on the capacitor
after 0.14 seconds. Include units!
