Module Description
This module is designed to support your transition to postgraduate level
study in the use and practice of communication skills around your
programme assessments. This module will provide you with key
foundational communication skills in reading and writing that you can take
into your other courses on the programme as well as into future business
employment. A core focus of this module is to help you develop
foundational knowledge in critical reading and writing skills. As a critical
reader, you will learn how to evaluate academic writing, and how
researchers communicate a coherent and convincing argument. As a
critical writer, you will learn techniques on how to develop and position
your own arguments. As part of this experience, you will learn how to
leverage academic scholarship within your work.

Module Description- intentions of the

module
The core aim of this module is to improve student communication skills as
they relate to the MSc International Business programme, as well as to
establish key communication skills for future employment.
One challenge faced by all new postgraduate students is acclimating to a
new programme of study. Students are required to quickly calibrate their
existing communication knowledge base with programme expectations in
order to address any potential skills gap. The problem is that students
often do not realise how significant their communication skills gap is until
after they have completed a full-term of study. This post-reflective form of
student practice means that students often complete a full-term of study
before understanding areas that they need to address.
In addition, business research has demonstrated that there is a gap
between the communication skills required by business practitioners and
those skills delivered by new graduates. Many graduate employers have
actively called for formal postgraduate training in communication skills. A
core aim of this module is to put business communication skills at the
heart of the MSc International Business curriculum. Students will be able
to take the skills learned in this course directly into future business
employment.
This course aims to deliver specialised sessions in business
communication. Students will develop strategies to help them become
better communicators on their programme and within business industry.
Students will receive formal training in business communication with an
aim to incorporate these strategies into their own worldview. Through a

3
series of lectures and interactive role-plays, students will be equipped
with practice-based knowledge that they can take into the workplace.

Assignment: Element One
Part A: Using Literature in Reflective Writing
Objective:
The objective of this element of the assessment is to reflect on a current
issue within international business. You will select a recent, newsworthy
business article that you find relevant to studying an international
business degree. You will be provided with a list of international business
resources where you can select an article that you find interesting (note
the news article must be written in English).
Your task is to write a reflective paper that describes and explains in an
introspective, first person narrative, your reactions to the content of this
article and the international business issue discussed. Please note that I
am not asking you to give me a summary of this article, I am asking you
to focus on how you interpret the article and understand the implications
of the article in relation to your own opinion, your own personal
assumptions and your own lived experiences. The aim is then discuss
what you think the implications are for international business. You will
use literature to help you support your answers. Remember that
you are the central object of the paper, not the research materials.
A reflection paper is an essay that requires you to express your opinion on
a topic. In the paper, you will analyse and reflect upon how the subject
matter of this article has shaped your thoughts and opinions on your
chosen international business issue. In addition to expressing your opinion
on this issue, you will need to use literature (both academic and
practitioner) to help you substantiate your arguments. Your essay will
need to feature approximately seven to ten separate references,
which will come from both academic and practitioner literature.
Reflective writing can help build a bridge of relevancy between theoretical
knowledge and the real world. By engaging in this form of writing, you can
gain a deeper understanding of underlying theories and their analytical
properties as they apply to international business practices. Reflection
papers can help you see the big picture associated with international
business by forcing you to think about the connections between scholarly
content, your lived experiences outside of University and current events.
This process fosters a broader, macro-level understanding of your
experiences in relation to what is being taught in your international
business program.
Finally, a core objective of this assignment is to help you to develop your
business communication skills. Reflective writing offers you a way to
consider how your own knowledge and skills fit within professional
international business practice. This essay will give you the opportunity to

8
communicate those ideas in ways that are personal and relevant to you. It
will also help you to identify supporting scholarship that helps you to add
validity to your position and approach to an international business issue.

10
Structure for Part A: Using Literature in Reflective
Writing:
Title:
Your choice of title should include the keywords that will indicate to the
reader what international business issue you are exploring and the focus
of your argument.

Introduction (150-200 words):

Your introductory paragraph should include a statement of your purpose,
which is to review your selected text (give the name(s) of the authors, the
title of the article, the date of the publication, and the source of the
publication). The introduction is arguably the most important element of
your paper as it achieves three important goals:
1. It positions your reflection relative to the international business
issue at hand.
2. It creates a coherent structure for you as a writer. The structure you
introduce in the introduction will feature in the body of the essay.
3. It helps orientate your reader to what you are arguing. It helps your
reader understand your subject position as an author, the
importance of the issue at hand and your relationship to that issue.
Your introduction should set the tone for your readers by giving them an
overview of:
 What international business issue are you looking at?
 Why is this issue important (i.e. for you and for international
business)?
 What do you intend to argue? Addressing this question will help you
to structure the body of your essay.
Again, your introduction to your paper frames your arguments as a writer.
It channels your writing into a specific structure. For your reader, an
introduction helps them to understand the positioning of your work and
what arguments will follow.

Body (925 words):

You will likely write three or four paragraphs in the body of your essay. You
will want to try avoid overly long and lengthy paragraphs. Each paragraph
should contain a topic sentence that provides a context for the point that
you are trying to make in that paragraph.
The structure of the body is derived from how you framed your arguments
within your introduction. The body of the essay is the opportunity for you
to highlight your opinions and thoughts regarding your international
business topic. It is an opportunity to draw from your previous experiences

11
or knowledge of the issue at hand. It is also the opportunity to use
scholarship (practitioner and academic) to help you support the reflection
you are putting forth.
Try and think of the body of the essay as having ‘themes.’ Themes are
coherent ideas related to the international business issue you addressing.
The body of the essay might have two to four themes that you want to
develop. These themes are ways of ‘looking at’ the issue at hand.

Conclusion (100-125 words):

Your conclusion is an opportunity to summarise and reinforce the ideas
and opinions that you have developed within the body of your essay. It is
an opportunity to highlight what you have learned through your analysis
of the international business issue you have chosen and areas for further
learning.

Appendix:
Your appendix should feature a copy of the article you are using for this
essay. This does not count in your word count.
Assessment Submission:
You will submit 1 PDF document, which will also contain Assessment
Element One Part B, as well as the job description and PowerPoint
screenshots of Assessment Element Two.

Assignment: Element One

Part B: Technology Enhanced
Communication
Objective:
The objective of this assessment is to demonstrate proficiency in using
ChatGPT to develop a compelling and informative text about the
relevance of studying international business. This task encourages you to
use AI technology as a supportive tool in the development of persuasive
content while also demonstrating your understanding and knowledge of
international business concepts and literature. This element of the
assessment will challenge you to think critically about how you can use
technology as a foundation to construct a stronger, more personal
argument. You will learn how to use technology to be a better business
communicator.

12
Instructions:
Task outline:
All students will be given the same text generated by Chat GPT with the
title "Why study international business?” (see below).
Your task will be to rewrite and refine this text to make it a stronger piece
of content, targeted at the audience listed below.
This content is designed for promotional use by the University of Exeter
and should represent a professional but authentic ‘student voice’ to
complement the main University programme information.
As part of this exercise, you will ‘reword’ the Chat GPT narrative by adding
your own reflective narrative to pinpoint what you have changed, why and
your reflections on the process of rewriting the text. While it is fine to
directly use some ChatGPT sentences within your draft, try to strengthen
the text using your own words. ChatGPT should be the idea generator here
and you should be the content developer here.

The target audience for the message ‘Why Study International Business’:
1. Prospective Students: individuals who are considering applying to
the University of Exeter and want detailed information about the
course, including its content and potential career outcomes.
2. Parents and Guardians: Parents and guardians of prospective
students may visit the website to gather information about the
courses their children are interested in pursuing. They may want to
understand the course's overall quality, reputation, and relevance to
future career prospects.
3. Employers and Industry Professionals: Some employers and
industry professionals may check the university's promotional
materials to measure the course’s quality and identify potential
sources of talent.
Rewriting the text: Rewrite the text yourself or use a combination of both
the OpenAI ChatGPT interface and your own changes. Ensure that
references and/or citations are added to support the arguments and data.
Content Criteria: The revised text should cover the key reasons and
benefits of studying international business. Ensure that the content
includes aspects such as career opportunities, industry trends, relevance,
impact on businesses, and the evolving international business landscape.
Please consider the target audience carefully to develop adequate
content.
Word Limit: Your re-worded generated text should be 600 words + 10%
and your reflective narrative of how you enhanced, modified or added to
the re-worded text should be a further 400 words + 10%

13
Structure and Flow: Organise the revised text logically, with clear
introductory, main body, and concluding sections. Maintain a smooth flow
of ideas and arguments throughout.
Presentation: It is important that you include your narrative comments &
reflections of how you changed the ChatGPT generated content. Where
you have changed the text, you should provide specific and detailed
footnotes to outline and justify your revised text. Please do not use the
‘track changes’ function to word as this will make it difficult to read. Any
changes to the ChatGPT generated content should be noted in the
footnotes.

Reword the following ChatGPT text:

Here is an example of how you might reword the ‘why study international
business’ ChatGPT text. I am not looking for an exact replica of what I
have written here. I am looking for you to work with ChatGPT to generate
your own version. I do however expect that the text will have 3-5
references.

Citations and references: You should include external sources or statistics
and should reference these using the APA style of referencing. These
should be cited in the text itself and then written in full in a reference list
after the rewritten content and footnotes. Do NOT use the footnote
feature to reference your sources as this is not the APA style.
Assessment Submission: You will submit a PDF document with the revised
text and footnotes as outlined above. In the footnotes, you should discuss
your approach to interacting with ChatGPT, any challenges faced, and the
overall effectiveness of the AI tool in helping you create your final blog.
You will submit 1 PDF document, which will also contain Assessment
Element One Part A, as well as the job description and PowerPoint
screenshots of Assessment Element Two.
Note :
This assessment provides an opportunity to explore the relationship
between human creativity and AI technology. While ChatGPT can assist
you in generating content, your understanding of international business
concepts and your ability to structure arguments coherently remain
paramount. Focus on integrating AI-generated content seamlessly into
your writing to create a compelling narrative.

17
Assignment: Element Two
Narrated Presentation
Objective:
The objective of the final component of your assessment is to help you
develop your own personal business communication skills and how this
might translate into the job market. I would like you to consider how you
might best position yourself for employment after graduation.
In this exercise I would like you to write your own job advertisement, using
ChatGPT, for what you would consider your ideal role upon graduation.
You will need to use the ChatGPT prompts to adjust the description of your
job until it best fits the type of job you want to target. (Alternatively, you
may use a job description from your ideal graduate scheme, internship or
job role, you can use this in place of ChatGPT if you like.). The point of the
exercise is for you to start thinking about how you might best
communicate your experiences to a future employer.
Students who graduate from an MSc International Business programme
often work in the following fields:
 Management Consulting
 Brand Management
 Human Resource Manager
 Business Development Consultant
 Global Supply Chain Manager
 Management or Marketing Analyst
 Financial or Wealth Management
 Procurement Manager
 Investment Banking
The list here is not exhaustive but might give you an idea of the type of
role you might be interested in upon graduation.
I would like you to take the job description that you generated in ChatGPT
(or a real job description) and give a 3-4 minute narrated video
presentation discussing why you think you are suitable for the role.

18
Here is an example of a simple ChatGPT generated international business
role:

Target audience for the message

The target audience for your narrated presentation would be the
recruitment manager of the company that is listing the job position. You
will need to tailor your message. You will want to highlight your interest in
applying for the role, highlight how you meet the key responsibilities of
the role and how you have the prerequisite qualifications for the role. You
want to try and convince this manager that you would be a good fit for
this position. You also want to convince this manager to choose you over
another candidate.
Structure and Flow:
I am the only person who will watch your narrated presentation. Try and
act relaxed and make eye contact with your camera. Try to speak

19
naturally as if this were an interview narration rather than reading line-by-
line. Consider your posture and dress. Act professionally. If possible, smile
every now and then. Remember, this assessment is about you and what
you offer.
The narration doesn’t have to be perfect. You may make mistakes while
narrating. Correct them in real time and move on. I am not going to mark
you down if you make a mistake. Try and record your narration in one
sitting. Please don’t record elements of the narration and edit them
together. Try and create a natural flow to the presentation.
The narrated presentation should last 3-4 minutes and you should have 2-
4 slides (plus one additional slide(s) which contains the job description).
Please consider the setting of your narration and do this in an area where
there is minimal background noise.
Submission:
The 2-4 presentation slides (plus the slide(s) that contains the job
description) should be included in the pdf file submission for Element One
(Part A and Part B) of your submission.
For the narrated video, you will need to use zoom or Microsoft Teams to
record your presentation.
Zoom- use your university registered zoom account:
