CONTENT
In the first part of this module, family types, family members, relatives and the importance of
family is presented through some examples.
How can you define the term ‘family’?
What is the importance of family?
How many people are there in your nuclear family?
Family Types
You may have a nuclear family or an extended family.
Your nuclear family includes your father, mother and siblings.
Your extended family includes all of the people in your father and mother's families.
You may also have a stepfamily. Your stepfamily includes people who became part of your
family due to changes in family life. These changes may include death, divorce or separation.
New partnerships create new children. The new children and their relatives become part of
your blended family. Some people are born into a stepfamily.

I have got a sister but I haven’t got a brother.
She hasn’t got any sisters or brothers. She is an only child.
FUNCTION
We use possessive 's to say that something or someone belongs to a person, is connected to a
place, or to show the relationship between people. The possessive’s always comes after a
noun.

VOCABULARY
Your family members are mother, father, siblings, grandparents.
First-degree relatives are mother, father, (parent), child, (children,) son, daughter, (sibling),
brother and sister.
Second-degree relatives are (grandparent), grandfather, grandmother, (grandchild,
grandchildren), grandson, granddaughter, aunt, uncle, niece and nephew.
Third-degree relatives are great-grandparent, great-grandfather, great-grandmother, great-
grandchild, great-grandchildren, great-grandson, great-granddaughter, great-uncle, great-aunt,
cousin, grandniece and grandnephew.
Members of family-in-law are (spouse), wife, husband, father-in-law, sibling-in-law, son-in-
law, daughter in law.
Step- relatives: step-mother/step-brother, etc.
Nuclear family consists of father, mother and kids.
Extended Family consists of parents, kids, grandparents and maybe aunts and uncles.
Single parent family consists of only mother and kids/ only father and kids.
Blended family consists of mother, step-father and kids/ father, step-mother and kids.
