TITLE OF PROJECT

DO STUDENTS OF GRADE 115 SPEND MORE TIME ON SOCIAL MEDIA THAN ON

STUDYING?

3
INTRODUCTION

The following project is a School Based Assessment (SBA) that will primarily
attempt to discover if students of Grade 115 at the St. Catherine High School
spend more time on social media than studying. The media today is one of the
major things you’ll find most teenagers spending most of their time on, instead
of studying you’ll find most teenagers on a lot of different apps which are all
classified as the term ‘Social Media’.

METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

The researchers chose to use a quantitative method to execute this research. In

order to collect data for this research, the method of investigation used is an
online questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of closed ended questions. A
questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions for the
purpose of gathering information from respondents (written interview).

The questionnaire as a tool for collecting data has a number of advantages:

● They are relatively easy to organize/ analyze.

● The format is familiar to most respondents.

● They can be used for sensitive topics that respondents may feel
uncomfortable speaking to an interviewer about.
However, it also has its disadvantages:

● Unanswered questions.

● Accessibility Issues.

The St. Catherine High School has a population of over 2000 students. 400+ (1/4)
of those students are Grade 11’s. However, a sample of 30 questionnaires was
sent out to the students of 115.
The questionnaires were sent out and analyzed within 3 school days.

Analysis of data

11
In figure 2 the questionnaire revealed that only 4% of the students of 11 5 uses
social media to study, social media can be used to connect with peers and make
study groups so that you can study together with your mates, there are
documents, videos, links and other types of information that can be highly
effective in improving the academic performance of students 14% uses it for
inspiration, social media provides stories that get under your skin and makes
you appreciate your life, there are inspirational quotes, ideas, stories, and
articles on social media that can inspire you, 36% uses it to browse/ waste time
whilst the other 46% uses social media to keep in touch with their family
members, social media is mostly about conversations, community, and
connecting with people and building relationships; it doesn’t only allows you to
hear what people say but it enables you to respond in a variety of different
ways. In table 1 all the students that answered the questionnaire were
impacted in some way by social media. When answering the questionnaire
majority of the students (59%) stated that after using social media the positive
effect it has on them is that they build positive relationships with their internet
pairs, this happens when you develop your communication skills, manage
mobile technology, learn to give, and take feedbacks from pairs and develop
empathy, it can also allow you to have a constant flow of communication
between pairs and help sustain long-distance relationships and strengthen
them. The other 41% stated that the positive effects have on them is that it
gives them a better understanding of their surroundings, social media makes
you aware of the negative, positive and all the changes happening around
you.In figure 1 the negative effect social media has on 46 % of the students is
poor academic performance, whilst 36% have attention deficit disorder and the
other 18% participate less in their homes. Social media sometimes tends to be a
distraction and it is a platform that has many contents linked to many different
connections that quickly distract users away from their original purpose.

Discussion OF Findings

12
During the investigation, the researcher found out that:
*Majority of the students perform poorly in schools after spending most of their
time on social media.
* They also realized that when most students spend most of their time on social
media, the main positive effect it has on them is building positive relationships
with internet pairs.
* More than half of the respondents use social media to keep in touch with
friends and family.
* An extraordinarily few students use social media for studying.

CONCLUSION

13
The research team can conclude that an extraordinarily little number of
students uses social media to study instead the majority of the students use.
