Coming to New York?
Read on before you start packing!
It is always very important to be selective with the clothes you put in your
suitcase every time you travel. But in the case of New York City - or the Big
Apple, as it is also called - the seasons are so different that you really need to
know what clothes to take in summer, autumn (or fall in American English),
winter or spring. In winter, it can be very cold with temperatures sometimes
reaching 23°F (-5°C). It can be snowy too, so you must take your boots, a couple
of thick pullovers, a scarf, gloves and a warm overcoat. It is really baking hot in
summer but it can also be cloudy and rainy, so do not forget to pack your
raincoat and umbrella apart from many T-shirts and light shirts, shorts and
sunglasses. Spring is definitely a very nice season in NYC because the days are
usually sunny and cool. It is a great time of the year to walk in the streets and
the many beautiful parks that you can find there, for example, Central Park. It
is then a good idea to pack a couple of comfortable trainers or tennis shoes and
light trousers or jeans. Finally, when visiting NYC in autumn, you must
remember that this is a warm - about 59° F (19°C) - and windy season. It can also
get a bit rainy, so the clothes you must pack are very similar to the ones you
need to wear in spring, but do not forget to include some sweaters and a light
jacket. As you can see, the Big Apple is a city you can enjoy all the year round.
Read the text and mark True [T] or False [F]
1. The Big Apple is another name for the city of New York. [ ]
2. The weather in NYC changes a lot form one season to another. [ ]
3. Autumn and spring can be very rainy in NYC. [ ]
4. Summer is a nice season to be outdoors in NYC. [ ]
