EPISODE 1: The School Environment

SPARK YOUR INTEREST

This Episode 1 provides an opportunity for students to examine and reflect on a school environment
that promotes learning and development.

TARGET YOUR INTENDED

LEARNING OUTCOME
At the end of this Episode, I must be able to determine the characteristics of a school environment
that is safe, secure, and is supportive of learning (PPST 2.1.1).

REVISIT THE LEARNING

ESSENTIALS

1. A physical environment conducive for learning is one that has consistent practices that:
 Keep the school safe, clean, orderly and free from distraction;
 maintain facilities that provide challenging activities; and
 address the physical, social and psychological needs of the students.

2. Display boards can be powerful in communicating information about learning environment.

They help in building and establishing the school culture. These boards become one way for
everyone to learn about the vision-mission, goals, and values that the school upholds.
3. As a basic part of the school’s visual environment, display boards have four general purposes:
 Decorative- They offer visual stimulation and appeal to aesthetics. They set the social
and psychological atmosphere of the school.
 Motivational- They encourage students to perform better and have greater confidence.
An example would be the display of students’ outputs that show that each output is
recognized and valued. The bulletin boards help celebrate the learners’ growth and
process.
 Informational- They are used as a strategy to readily disseminate information.
 Instructional- They move students to respond and participate through interactive
displays. They get students to think about and communicate their learning
4. The set of criteria for evaluating bulletin board displays includes effective communication,
attractiveness, balance, unity, legibility, correctness, and durability.

ANALYZE
How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact the learning of the
students going to school? What are your conclusions?
School facilities or classroom to be specific creates and houses the students. It serves as an
area that enables learning. The environment that a school establish contributes to the
growth of the students. If a room is clean, well maintained and is conducive for learning
then its students can learn knowledge, acquire skills and develop character.
How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent development/How does this
relate to your knowledge of facilitating learning?
In the theories that both courses have taught me how a school, community or
environment in general can affect the growth of a child or student. If the community
declines learning then students’ ability to learn is damaged, and if the community is
supportive to learning then the child or students are nurtured and fed with knowledge.
REFLECT
1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why? Why
not?
Yes, as it allows me to feel that teachers are valued, respect is observed and learning is
given significance. As I observe teachers are supportive, heads are responsive, and the
community environment is conducive.
2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?
A school campus is conducive to learning when it provides students necessary facilities and
opportunities. School community is productive, good character is established and
standards are observed.
3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?
Classroom is conducive when students is given equal opportunity, adequate
support and safe for learning.

4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?

By giving my students equal opportunity in participating in my class, equip my
classroom with books and materials supportive to learning.
5. Write your additional learnings and insights here.
I learned that a school or learning environment plays a pivotal role to the
development of the students as well as the teachers and surrounding community.
It is also important to establish partnership and collaboration among members of
the community for the betterment of the school and the welfare of the students.

What suggestions can you make?
A self-assessment checklist shall be included, as well as list of equipment’s or proper protective
equipment should be included.
Based on your suggestions, propose an enhanced version of the display board. Use the form below.

My Proposed Board Display

Theme: Hygiene and Safety

Board Title: Laboratory Protocols

Rationale:
Food borne illness, kitchen accidents are evitable issues which is rampant at most laboratories, even
at food factories and establishments. It is necessary for students to ensure their safety and proper
kitchen etiquettes, to ensure that food is safe and to avoid food contamination. With these safety
laboratory protocols we can ensure that our students practice at highest standard and observant in
food safety standards.

Objectives:
A. To ensure that students are well informed with the protocols in kitchen and food handling.
B. Allow student to self-evaluate through checklist.
C. To practice the standard food safety protocols.

Best features of my proposed bulletin enhancement:

The feature I added are the step-by-step process of how to properly wash hands which is an SOP
when handling food items. Another is the discussion of how important proper hygiene is as well as
the checklist to remind students what to do and what to wear for their safety.

Content Resources (Name each needed resource and give each a brief description):
1. Checklist for proper protective equipment this includes apron, gloves, mask, anti-slip shoes,
hairnet or hat, and pants.
2. Dos and Don’ts. this are discussion of the protocols what things can be done and what things
we should avoid while in the kitchen laboratory.
3. Proper hand washing techniques it is a step-by-step process on how to wash hands properly.
4.

Materials for aesthetic enhancement:

1. Pictures
2. Text
3. Colored materials
4. Glue
REFLECT
1. Name at least five skills that a teacher should have to be able to come up with effective board
displays. Elaborate on why each skill is needed.

Creativity. A teacher should be creative to catch the attention of the student. Resourceful.
This includes finding legitimate sources and improvisation.
Good grammar skills. Teacher should use words properly.
Organizational skills. To organize information’s and graphics.
Communication skills. To clearly convey the idea and to be able to communicate to students.
2. Which of the skills you named in # 1 do you already have? Recall your past experiences in
making board displays. How do you practice these skills?
Communication skills, as a student leader, I have used my voice to influence my co students,
to educate and to communicate effectively. It may be in form of verbal, action or through
written announcements.

3. Which skills do you still need to develop? What concrete steps will you take on how you can
improve on or acquire these skills?
Creativity, I am able think of ideas but I lack on transforming ideas into reality. Since I lack at
skills of artistry. However, I will be able to cope with it with continuous practice and
workshops.
