Topic: Composing an Argumentative Essay Duration: 3 class periods

I. Learning Objectives:

1. Students will be able to identify the components of an argumentative essay.


2. Students will be able to develop a strong thesis statement for an argumentative
essay.
3. Students will be able to provide evidence and support for their arguments in an
essay.
4. Students will be able to write a well-structured argumentative essay with clear
organization and logical flow.

II. Materials Needed:

 Writing materials (paper, pens, pencils, etc.)


 Laptops or computers for PowerPoint Presentation
 Sample argumentative essays for analysis
 Rubric for assessing argumentative essays

III. Procedure:
A. Day 1: March 18, 2024
Introduction:

1. Engage students by asking them to share their opinions on a controversial topic,


such as social media usage, climate change, or school dress codes. Discuss the
concept of argumentation and why it is important to back up opinions with
evidence in writing.
2. Introduce the components of an argumentative essay (thesis statement, evidence,
counterarguments, etc.) and discuss the purpose of each.
3. Provide students with a sample argumentative essay to analyze and identify the
components.

B. Discussion:
C. Activity 1: Developing a Thesis Statement (Day 1:March 18, 2024 ):

1. Divide students into small groups and assign each group a controversial topic to
work on.
2. Instruct students to research their topic and develop a strong thesis statement that
clearly states their position.
3. Encourage students to use evidence and reasoning to support their thesis
statement.
4. Have each group present their thesis statement to the class and provide feedback.

D. Activity 2: Gathering Evidence (Day 2, March 19, 2024 ):

1. Ask students to research and gather evidence to support their thesis statements.
2. Provide guidance on credible sources and how to properly cite evidence in an
essay.
3. Instruct students to organize their evidence and make connections to their thesis
statements.
4. Have students discuss their findings with a partner and provide feedback on the
strength of their evidence.

E. Activity 3: Writing the Essay (Day 3 & 4 :March 19, 2024 ):

1. Guide students through the process of structuring their argumentative essay,


including organizing their ideas, creating an introduction, body paragraphs, and a
conclusion.
2. Encourage students to use transitions and connective words to improve the flow of
their essay.
3. Provide time for students to write their essays and revise them with the help of
peer feedback.
4. Review the rubric for assessing argumentative essays and provide guidance on
how to improve their writing.

F. Application (Day 5 : March 20, 2024 ):

1. Have students share their essays with the class or in small groups for feedback
and discussion.
2. Reflect on the process of composing an argumentative essay and discuss the
importance of logical reasoning and evidence in persuasive writing.
3. Encourage students to continue practicing their argumentative writing skills and
apply them to real-world situations.

IV. Assessment:

 Color the Argumentative Essay according to the color assigned for each part:

Claim – Red
Argument – Blue
Evidence – Yellow
Counterargument – Black
Rebuttal – Orange
Conclusion - Green

 Create your own Argumentative Essay based on your chosen global or local issue.
Essays will be assessed based on the rubric provided, focusing on thesis
statement, evidence, organization, and overall persuasiveness of the argument.

V. Assignment: Revisit your essay at home and rewrite some corrections that were
marked.
