1.A survey of 100 households in an American town asked how many cars there were in each
household The results are given below
2. The survey in question 1 also asked how many TV sets there were in each household. The results
are given below:
TVs Frequency Value x frequency
0 2 0
1 30 30
2 52 104
3 8 24
4 5 20
5 3 15
Sum: 193
Total households: 100
Mean: 193 ÷ 100 = 1.93 TV sets per household
3. A manager keeps a record of the number of calls she makes each day on her mobile phone.
Calls Frequency Value x Frequency
0 3 0
1 4 4
2 7 14
3 8 24
4 12 48
5 10 50
6 14 84
7 3 21
8 1 8
Sum: 253
Total frequency: 62
Mean: 253 ÷ 62 = 4.08 calls per day
4. A cricket team keeps a record of the number of runs scored in each over.
Runs Frequency Value x Frequency
0 3 0
1 2 2
2 1 2
3 6 18
4 5 20
5 4 20
6 2 12
7 1 7
8 1 8
Sum: 89
Total frequency: 25
Mean: 89 ÷ 25 = 3.56 runs per over
5. A class conduct an experiment in biology. They place a number of 1 m by 1 m square grids on the
playing field and count the number of plants in each grid. The results obtained are given below.
A.)
Plants Frequency Value x Frequency
0 3 0
1 12 12
2 9 18
3 7 21
4 2 8
5 0 0
6 1 6
7 1 7
Sum: 72
Total grids: 35
Mean: 72 ÷ 35 = 2.06 plants per grid
B.) Greater than mean: (3, 4, 6, 7): 11 times
6. As part of a survey, the number of planes which were late arriving at Birmingham Airport each day
was recorded. The results are listed below
Sum: 38
Total frequency: 33
Mean: 38 ÷ 33 = 1.15 planes late per day
7.Hannah drew this bar chart to show the number of repeated cards she got when she opened packets
of football stickers.
Repeats Frequency
0 7
1 12
2 10
3 8
4 5
5 3
6 4
7+12+10+8+5+3+4=49
8. In a season a football team scored a total of 55 goals. The table below gives a summary of the
number of goals per match.
(b)
9. A traffic warden is trying to work out the mean number of parking tickets he has issued per day. He
produced the table below, but has accidentally rubbed out some of the n umbers.
10. The number of children per family in a recent survey of 21 families is shown.
11. The bar chart below shows the shoe sizes of a group of 50 children.
(a) 12 children wear size 7 shoes
(b) For shoe sizes smaller than 7:
Size 4: 5 children
Size 5: 14 children
Size 6: 10 children Total: 5 + 14 + 10 = 29 children
(c) Modal size = 5 (has highest frequency of 14 children)
(d) To find median:
Total children = 50 Middle position = 25th position Counting up: 5 + 14 + 10 + 12 = 41 (up to size 7)
So median = 6 (as 25th position falls in size 6)
(e) Probability questions: (I) Probability of size 5 = 14/50 = 0.28 (ii) Probability of size larger than 6:
Sizes 7 and 8: 12 + 9 = 21 children Probability = 21/50 = 0.42
(f) The mode (size 5)
