Good morning/afternoon, the judges, the negative team members, and the audience.

Welcome to this debate.

My name is Viet , and I’m the 1st speaker of our Affirmative team, who will be talking
about later school start time can Improve Sleep Quality.

From our team, we have Quy as the 2nd speaker, who will elaborate on the fact that A
later start time for high school helps students avoid busy times.

The third member is Khang , who will talk about The well-being of Vietnamese high school
students could be greatly enhanced

Ms/r Kien as the 3rd speaker, who will do the rebuttal.

The motion for debate today is: This house would implement a later start

time for high schools in Vietnam to improve student well-being

Now, we strongly believe that implementing a later start time for high schools in Vietnam will
improve student well-being. But before we come to our actual argumentation, let us first define
some important terms in this debate. We believe that what is meant by "later start time" is
delaying the start of the school day by at least one hour compared to current schedules.
Additionally, "student well-being" refers to the physical, emotional, and academic health of
students, including better sleep, reduced stress, and improved performance in school.

Here are first arguments for our proposion Adolescents require more sleep due to
developmental changes. A later start time allows students to get the recommended 8-10
hours of sleep, reducing sleep deprivation.

Let’s explore why sleep is crucial for teenagers. Adolescents need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep
each night due to the significant physical and mental changes they experience. Unfortunately,
many students in Vietnam have to wake up early for school, often as early as 5:30 AM, which
leads to chronic sleep deprivation.

Biological Factors

Research indicates that teenagers experience a natural shift in their body clocks, known as
circadian rhythms. This shift means they feel more alert later in the evening and want to sleep
later in the morning. When high schools in Vietnam start early, students are forced to wake up
when their bodies still crave sleep. A study from the Vietnam National Institute of Occupational
Health found that 58% of students report feeling sleepy during the day due to inadequate
sleep, highlighting a mismatch between their biological needs and school schedules.

Impact on Sleep Duration

A survey conducted in Ho Chi Minh City revealed that many students get less than 6 hours of
sleep on school nights, far below the recommended amount. In contrast, schools that have
implemented later start times, such as some schools in Hanoi, have seen improvements in
student sleep duration and academic performance. Students reported feeling more alert and
focused in class, leading to higher grades and better engagement in their studies.

Mental Health Benefits

The connection between sleep and mental health is especially relevant in Vietnam, where
academic pressure is high. A study from the University of Danang found that students
experiencing sleep deprivation reported higher levels of anxiety and stress. By shifting school
start times later, schools could help reduce these mental health issues. Students who get
enough sleep are better equipped to manage stress and perform well academically.

So, why is this important? Improving sleep quality addresses teenagers' biological needs and
promotes healthier lifestyles. When students get enough sleep, they can focus better, engage in
class, and feel emotionally stable. This not only enhances their academic performance but also
fosters a positive school environment.

Furthermore, learning to prioritize sleep and self-care now sets students up for healthier
choices in adulthood. When we invest in their well-being, we prepare them for success in both
school and life.

Conclusion

In conclusion, implementing a later start time for high schools in Vietnam can significantly
benefit students. By allowing them to get the sleep they need, we can improve their academic
performance, enhance their mental health, and create a healthier school environment.
Prioritizing students' sleep is essential for fostering a thriving, engaged, and successful future
generation.
