Instructions: for PDF, print on cardstock, laminate, and cut out pictures.

These cards are all pictures of Green Series (phonogram) words. They can be used in a variety of ways. One of the most
common is with the movable alphabet. Simply have the child select a few pictures and put them on a rug. Then have
them sound out the letters, placing each letter on the rug next to the picture.

Also, they are great story starters. Have a child place one on the rug and write a short story about it using the movable
alphabet.

For an older child, you might want to have them pick 10 cards and alphabetize them.

Here are the names of the pictures, from left to right, row by row (they are grouped randomly):

Set 1: wheat, toes, pie, key; bee, gate, loop, scarf; seed, toad, fly, steak.

Set 2: note, cube, yarn, road; leaf, shirt, goat, bird; rose, earth, wheel, tree.

Set 3: glue, pear, saw, rope; sleigh, soap, whale, lime; cake, dice, core, cone.

Set 4: soup, bead, seal, fern; beet, paint, rake, toast; field, jeep, snail, chair.

Instructions: Print on cardstock and laminate. Cut cards apart. Please note that there are two sets
of each word/picture—one set to be cut apart (use guidelines) and one set to be kept together as
control cards.

If this seems like too many pictures and words at one time, you can divide this into two sets.

Have the child lay all the words out on a rug. Then have them match the pictures. Finally have
them put the control cards next to each picture/word pair and correct any that are wrong.

After that, ask the child to write one of the words on a piece of paper (they choose), and also
draw a picture to go with it if they desire.

To use: Print on 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock. Laminate and cut apart. Cut

on black lines, leaving a little bit of green edge on each card.

As children match these cards, they may notice that the rhyming
pairs, unlike the Pink and Blue series words, have different letters in
the middle of the word. This can lead them to understand that there
are many different ways to create the same phonetic sound.

In order to enable the children to successfully match the cards, it

helps to mark half of the rhyming cards in some way. One way is to
use a hole punch to mark one half of the cards with a hole in the
corner. Or, when you put them on the shelf, you can divide them in-
to two appropriate groups and wrap each one with a rubber band.

When you present the work, tell the kids to start by putting out all of
one set (it doesn’t matter which one). Then it’s much easier to
match the other half of the cards to the right one. You can include
this card with the work so children can check it themselves.

Pairs are:

Spelling Command Card

1. Write sentences using 5 of the words on a card.

2. Write 5 words and draw a picture for each one.

3. Spell each word out loud to a friend.

4. Write the words in alphabetical order.

5. Look up 2 words in the dictionary and write the definitions.

6. Write a story using at least 5 words from a card.

Instructions: Print on 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock. Laminate, then cut cards apart.

Using the Spelling Cards
Spelling Tests
You can use these cards for weekly spelling tests. Let the children study a card for a
week, then write the words as you say them aloud. It is very helpful to say the word in a
sentence when you are reading them off for a test. I recommend looking over the
card(s) ahead of time, since there are sometimes words (even short ones!) chosen on
the basics of phonetic sound (“roe”) that are not commonly used. You may need to
see the dictionary definition to be able to give a sentence to the kids.

Creative Writing
Use the Spelling Cards when you need creative writing prompts. Instruct the kids to
take at least 4-5 words off the card and use them in a story, essay, letter, etc. Write the
spelling list on a chalkboard or dry erase board so everyone can see them easily.
Quizzing a Partner
Each child selects a spelling card (any card they’d like; it doesn’t have to be that
week’s card) and they sit facing each other. They take turns reading off words to each
other and spelling them. When they finish, they have to write any words they missed.
Spelling Bee
This is a great classroom activity when you have 15-20 minutes to fill and you want to
do something as a group. Choose some spelling cards. Have the kids stand in a semi-
circle. Start with a child on the end. Read them a word and have them try to spell it.

If you are working with a mixed age group, it’s helpful to choose three cards (pink se-
ries, blue series, green series, and advanced) and ask each child a word based on
their own spelling level. One very nice thing about this activity is that the younger chil-
dren get to hear the older ones spelling difficult words.
Command Card Activities
Keep the Spelling Command Card with the spelling cards, and encourage the chil-
dren to choose it as part of their regular work.
Dictionary Work
When you are introducing children to the dictionary, use a spelling card and have
them look up each word on the card. When an older child moves from a beginning
dictionary to a bigger one, have them use a harder spelling card to familiarize them-
selves with the larger dictionary. Have them write at least one definition that they find.

Instructions for PDF: print on cardstock and laminate. Cut cards out.

These cards are to be used for review of the Green Series Words. The child should have com-
pleted lots of other Green Series work first (matching, rhyming, spelling).

Put the cards in a bowl or basket. Have the child pick 5-10 and read them. It’s fun for a couple
of kids to sit in a circle and go around, each taking 1-2 cards out at a time and reading them.

A nice challenge for an older child would be to have them alphabetize 10 cards at a time.

Dictionary Work
When you are introducing children to the dictionary, use a spelling card and have
them look up each word on the card. When an older child moves from a beginning
dictionary to a bigger one, have them use a harder spelling card to familiarize them-
selves with the larger dictionary. Suggest that they write at least one definition.
