Reflective Log on Need of Compassionate Care

Description:

During my recent shift in the surgical ward, I encountered a particularly challenging

situation that has prompted me to reflect deeply on my experiences. A patient, Mr. Javed, was
recovering from a major abdominal surgery. He was in significant pain and expressed anxiety
about his recovery. As I approached him to assess his pain level and administer medication, I
noticed that he was visibly distressed, clutching the sides of his bed and breathing rapidly.

Feelings:

Initially, I felt a wave of empathy for Mr. Javed. I understood that surgery can be a
traumatic experience, and pain management is crucial for recovery. However, I also felt a sense
of pressure; I wanted to ensure that I provided the best care possible while adhering to hospital
protocols. I was anxious about whether I could effectively alleviate his pain and address his
emotional needs. This situation made me realize how important it is to balance clinical
responsibilities with compassionate care.

Evaluation:

In this scenario, I believe I handled the situation reasonably well. I approached Mr. Javed
with a calm demeanor, introduced myself, and asked how he was feeling. I assessed his pain
using a pain scale from 1 to 10 and noted that he rated it an 8. I administered his prescribed pain
medication and explained the process to him, which seemed to ease his anxiety slightly.
However, I felt that I could have done more to address his emotional distress. While I provided
the necessary medication, I didn’t take enough time to engage with him about his fears regarding
recovery, which could have further alleviated his anxiety.

Analysis:

This experience highlighted the importance of holistic care in nursing. While it is

essential to manage physical symptoms, emotional support is equally vital. I realized that
patients often feel vulnerable after surgery, and their emotional well-being can significantly
2

impact their recovery. I also recognized that effective communication is key in nursing. By
taking the time to listen to Mr. Javed’s concerns, I could have built a stronger rapport and
provided more comprehensive care.

Conclusion:

Reflecting on this experience, I understand that I need to improve my approach to patient

interactions. While I was focused on the clinical aspects of care, I neglected the emotional
component. In the future, I will strive to create a more supportive environment for my patients,
ensuring that I address both their physical and emotional needs. I will also seek to enhance my
communication skills, perhaps by attending workshops or seeking feedback from colleagues.

Action Plan:

To improve my practice, I plan to implement the following steps:

Enhance Communication Skills: I will focus on improving my communication skills to ensure

that I engage more fully with patients.

Patient Education: I will take the time to educate patients about infection prevention measures
and what they can do to help protect them, which may alleviate some of their anxiety.

Emotional Support Training: I will seek opportunities for training in providing emotional
support to patients, particularly those in vulnerable situations like dialysis. Understanding how to
address emotional needs can significantly enhance the patient experience.

Team Collaboration: I will collaborate with my colleagues to ensure that we are all aware of
the importance of addressing both the physical and emotional needs of our patients. This can
include regular team discussions about patient care strategies that encompass holistic approaches.

Reflective Practice: I will continue to engage in reflective practice after each shift to evaluate
my interactions with patients and identify areas for improvement. This will help me grow as a
healthcare professional and provide better care to my patients.
