Planning a Session

I. Review Recent Events


Read the most recent entries in your campaign log. If your
memory of a particular recent NPC, location, or plot point is
fuzzy, review its entry in your campaign compendium.
II. Review Character Profiles
Review each PC's profile in your campaign compendium,
including their abilities, equipment, goals, ideals, and bonds.
If you're unsure of what the PC hopes to accomplish and/or
what the PC expects to happen in the next session(s), contact
their player directly to ask.
III. Review Adventure Plan
Review your adventure plan for the current arc and the
current chapter. (If you expect your players to get to a new
chapter in the next session, complete an adventure plan for
the next chapter.) If necessary, make changes to your
adventure plan to match recent events, the players' current
abilities, or the players' current goals.
IV. Plan Scenes
For each scene in the current chapter's adventure plan,
organize that scene's notes in your session plan using the
following headings:
Background. The relevant background that you need to
run the scene, such as lore or weather.
Introduction. The scene's introductory descriptive text
and/or bullet-points, as well as any technical notes
regarding ambience, music, visuals, and/or lighting.
Details. A bullet-point list of any details, if any, that the
PCs can find by inspecting or interacting with particular
objects, locations, or creatures within the scene, including
rules to resolve those details (e.g., the DC to pick a lock, or
information about roleplaying a particular NPC).
Discoveries. A bullet-point list of any information, if any,
that the PCs can learn by inspecting or interacting with
particular objects, locations, or creatures within the
scene, as well as the means by which the PCs can do so.
Developments. A bullet-point list of any events, if any, that
the PCs can trigger by interacting with particular objects,
locations, or creatures within the scene, as well as any
events that may trigger on their own under certain
conditions.
Encounters. The contents of any combat encounters, skill
challenges and/or complex social encounters.
V. Complete Post-Session Review
After the session, record the session's events in your
campaign log. Update the status of any NPCs, locations, or
narrative threads that appeared in the session in your
campaign compendium. If any PCs gained or developed
new abilities, equipment, goals, ideals, and/or bonds, note
this in their profiles in your campaign compendium.
