In Front of the Elevators

Set-Up:
1. With 3/4 players, give each player 1 “Family Color card” (doubles as the player aid.) With 2 players, give 2 cards each.
2. There are 9 Elevator cards. 3 Pink, 3 Orange and 3 Navy. (Make sure you use the side for 3 (maroon) or 2/4 players
(navy.)) Separately, sort the 3 stacks with “III” on bottom, “II” next, and “I” on top. Put these 3 stacks in a vertical line
going up and down with room out to the right (this is where all the cards during the round will go.)
3. With 2/4 players, shuffle all 35 Person cards together. With 3 players, only use 4 of the colors (remove a color not being
used, and also 1 random card from the neutral color left in the deck.) Take note that in every game one of the colors will
not belong to a player (neutral color.)
4. By looking at the backs of the cards in the deck, randomly give each player 2 cards of their color face-down to form their
hand. (In a 2-player game, take 1 card of each family you represent, and if you get both Lost Child cards, replace 1 of
them with another card of that color.)
5. Flip over a Person card from the deck for each of the 3 Elevator rows and place the card face-up to the right of the
Elevator stacks. (If any Lost Child cards are flipped, or if all 3 cards are the same Person type, replace and draw a new
card.) This is the start of the Elevator lines. There will be 1 card in each line.
6. Give the deck one last quick shuffle, and then make 3 decks (equally as possible.) Place 1 deck to the left of each
Elevator stack. These 3 decks are the draw piles during the game. Randomly pick a 1st player.

Game Flow:
o The game is played over 3 rounds (denoted by the 3 Elevator cards in each stack.)
o During a round, players will go in clockwise order, playing 1 card (from their hand) to 1 row on their turn and then
drawing a card from any of the available draw decks (you will be able to see what color you are drawing.)
o The round will end when every player has only 1 card left in their hand, and then points are scored based on the
Elevator card for that row. (Each slot shows a point value for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and possibly 4th Person card in line.)

Game Turn:
o On a player’s turn, they take 1 of the 2 cards in their hand and play it to the back position of 1 of the 3 Elevator lines.
o Each card (except the Lost Girl) has a “Cut-in” ability shown at the top of that character’s card. If a certain character is in
the Elevator line you picked that your card would “cut in front of,” then you MUST slide the cards to the right and put
your card in front of that character instead of at the back of the line as you normally would.
o If there is more than 1 option for the “cut-in” ability, choose the card closest to the Elevator to cut in front of.
o The color doesn’t matter when it comes to the “cut-in” ability.
o Girl – Boy – Mom – Dad – Grandma – Grandpa – Girl (this is the sequence of who can cut in front of each other.)
o The Lost Child is always played to the back of a line, and then the player who played the Lost Child card chooses 1 card in
that row (matching the Lost Child’s color) to be placed directly to the right of the Lost Child. (If no matching color exists
in that line, do nothing.) After moving the matching colored card to the back, slide all cards to the left to close the gap.
o Café Rule – When 3 of the same type of Person (color doesn’t matter) are in the same line, they are removed from the
line and the active player takes the 3 cards in a face-up stack in front of themselves. (The Lost Child ability triggers
before the 3 Lost Child cards would be removed.)
o After placing their card, the current player ends their turn by drawing a new card from 1 of the remaining draw decks. If
no more cards remain, they don’t draw as this was their last turn for the round. After the last player takes their turn, all
players should have 1 card in their hand, the round is over. Time to score points!

Scoring/Next Round Set-up:

o Each of the Elevator cards shows how many Person cards with score and how many points each of those cards is worth
to their color owner. (Each player scores points for their color Person cards.)
o If a character scores points and is 1 of the 2 characters showing on the Elevator card, their point value is doubled (x2).
o The Lost Child card ALWAYS scores 0 points no matter where it is.
o Each set of 3 Girl, Boy, Mom, Dad, Grandma, or Grandpa (cards removed from Café Rule) earns 1 point. A set of 3 Lost
Child cards earns 2 points.
o After scores are noted on the score pad, remove the top Elevator card of each stack back to the box.
o Set-up the Person cards for next round just as explained under “set-up” above.
o The player who scored the most points in the previous round is the new Start Player.
o The winner of the overall game is the player with the most points after 3 rounds.
